Engine stopping instantly when turned off?
Hi all

I may be going insane, but hear me out..

A friend with a 2014 2.2 Defender Puma gave me a lift yesterday. I noticed that when he switched the engine off that it was instant compared to my 2013 that takes maybe a second before its fully off.

Now I've checked with my other car and my wife's car and neither of those shut off instantly either. they have a second when the engine shuts its self down.

Should there be a second or so delay as the engine stops when turned off at the ignition?

Am I going mad? Shocked

Hello Jim,

I am facing the same issue with mine and I am not sure if this was always the case.

I had to swap the engine years ago and recognized this shut off behaviour some time ago.

My mechanic, I sent him a video, is not sure, if this is normal, in another forum the people suggested to check the injectors which could drip. To check this I need to take them out and let them check at a Bosch Service. I haven't done that.

I will keep you updated, would be great if you could do the same.

So I'm not going mad then Laughing

The vehicle is well maintained and serviced regularly. It runs like a dream and he always uses premium diesel.

Have you had any fault codes thrown up? What about adding some injector cleaner to clean the injectors?

Hello Jim,

My TD4 (2013 Model) is also well maintained and serviced.

Premium Diesel when available and injector cleaner Done 3 weeks ago.

I will keep you updated After my mechanic having a Look into it.

The 2.2 should close the throttle body the instant you turn the ignition off. This is turn creates a vacuum at intake, and not allow the piston to create good compression. The result is a smooth switch off of the engine which might take a bit longer to stop. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

That's the way my 2.2 shuts down when I switch the ignition off.

I haven't mentioned anything to my buddy as I honestly thought that I was imagining things.

I guess that we will have to wait for Tobias to have his Puma investigated to find out what would cause an instant shut down.

Hello,

I will see my mechanic, he will see my Defender End of August, so there will be not a quick answer.

I read the thread about shuddering and would say, mine is not doing that, that running for a second longer after switching off.

Driving a car with so many noises and then getting suspicious about the engine noises Smile
