Constant hum from 50mph upwards
Right then, TD5 (130) with standard gearing and no lift.

when speed approaches 50mph get a very loud hum starting, appearing to come from the front of the vehicle. Gets louder up to 60, below 45mph all is normal.

Taking the vehicle out of gear and coasting downhill has no effect so it is directly related to roadspeed and not changing under load.

Anyone else had this before I start swapping front axle bits out?

Tyres? Significant damage to tread or sidewall even if holding pressure

Drain the front differential and strain the oil that comes out

The tread noise if big treads or bearing would be my guess

Change diff fluid (in my experience it is the most likely culprit). If no change in hum, check front wheel bearings.

Tyres starting to wear unevenly would be my first guess. Try swapping front to back. 1983 110 automatic OM606

Bizarrely I had this yesterday on my D2 (also TD5). I had put it down to the recently fitted roof rack but found that it goes away over 60mph. No discernable vibration through the steering wheel. Will investigate later and report back in case it helps diagnose yours. 1985 127 V8 Build Thread

After changing the n/s front wheel bearings (where it appeared the noise was coming from), there was no change. I then swapped the o/s as I was on a roll and the problem has gone!
