Timing chain, gears, guides and tensioner kits are inexpensive. So, yes, change it all while you are in there.

That has stayed very blue! Did you go for a good run? Mine was the same unless it went on at least a 2 hour run in the beginning, it did get worse over a few months. Fingers crossed it’s not the head for you.

So, were the bubbles coming up while you ran the test?

![]() Click image to enlarge Ran test again and waited a bit longer…… Have gone the route suggested by Bear now and ordered all the parts plus timing chain kit. Only thing not ordered is the head gasket as I assume I need to be 100% that it’s never been skimmed etc for gasket thickness? In the interests of do it once do it well what’s the best gasket make? Thanks 👍🏻 2010 2.4 TDCI Puma Defender 90 |

Both Bear100's and my heads past a machine shop pressure test but combustion gases were still leaking in use, albeit very, very slowly. I think that people should just fit a new head after 15+ years of use, no ifs, and/or, buts about it.
The head gasket thickness is based on piston protrusion. That does not change when the head is shaved. Just match the old gasket unless you also change pistons. |

PS: If you look carefully with a flashlight, you can see what gasket is in there without having to disassemble it.

Should just be a bare new head and use your cams/valves etc - but cleaned and re-lapped. 2008 2.4 110 Utility Station Wagon XS.

Turner sells a head complete with valves, springs, retainers and seals.
Lapping valves is generally frowned upon in these days of CNC valve machining. |

I’ve just had a look myself- I didn’t realise that was an option. Actually not a bad price for a new head.

its a pretty good price, well packaged and the head is a good quality item.
just to the right hand side front you can see the head gasket which will have 1-3 holes which denotes the thickness of the gasket, Turners will sell you an Elring which is really good quality. i bought a timing pin kit but you can use drill bits, it makes no difference, i also bought a tool for the timing cover seal, the tool wasn't a very good fit tbh and found using 2 alan keys and a screwdriver to twist it off and on was just as easy. plenty of light, plenty of gloves, plenty of tea, music on....its not so bad good luck 2023 Defender L663 V8 2016 Range Rover Autobiography 4.4 TDV8 (gone) 2010 110 XS Utility 2.4TDCI 2010 Range Rover Sport TDV8 (gone) 2007 Discovery HSE TDV6 (gone) 1993 110 csw 200 tdi (gone) 1994 90 HT 300 tdi (gone) 1994 discovery 300tdi (gone) 90 hybrid 3.5 v8 (gone) Range rover bobtail 3.5 v8 (gone) |

You don’t need to remove the inlet or exhaust manifolds completely. Release them from the head and pull them back. There is enough flexibility to this if the egr is disconnected. This means the turbo can stay completely connected. It turns it into a 1 day job rather than two if I do it this way

So……
All parts arrived, just head gasket to go. Would you say this is a two tooth gasket or could there be a third hole further along that can’t be seen? ![]() Click image to enlarge ![]() Click image to enlarge ![]() Click image to enlarge 2010 2.4 TDCI Puma Defender 90 |
