Maximum weight for spare wheel mounted bike carrier
Does anybody know what the maximum weight is that can be loaded onto the spare wheel? I'm thinking of buying 2 E-bikes which would weigh about 60kg (including the spare wheel mounted bike carrier) and would like to confirm if this is possible.

Hi

I would not hang e-bikes on a spare wheel carrier

If they are full suspension bikes the shock mounts are different from bike to bike so will hang at funky angles.

A road / gravel e bike will hang more level, assuming that they have a level top tube, any angle and again they will hang lopsided.

Next, whether emtb or gravel / road, if it has a carbon frame you are putting stresses where you shouldn’t and that could be dangerous to you when riding. Assuming the carrier that you are thinking off is the two prong style that hangs the frame.

The wheels on carrier will also be rated to carry heavier weights, some of the aluminium full power emtbs can weigh up to 25kg, which also leads to another consideration, lifting it up as high as the spare wheel.

A ‘wheels on carrier’ on the towbar is the best.

They also double up as a work stand if you need to do any last minute fettling.

I am sure that someone here will know the answer to that actual question you have asked, but it’s worth those considerations that I have added above especially if you have other bikes and or change bikes every few years that have different frame / suspension layouts.

Good luck

Hi Mark

Thanks for your advice, you've raised some good points I would never have thought of. I already have the carrier which I previously used for standard mountain bikes, just wondering if I could re-use it for electric mountain bikes. If I get e-bikes they will likely be hard tail so I'm guessing my existing carrier would be ok for just one bike.

Can you get tow bar mounted racks that will take into consideration clearance for the spare wheel and still take 2 bikes? Current: MY22 P400e SE

I use this mount for my 2 e-bikes:

It is excellent, they know Defenders well & will recommend the right gear.
