Puma 2.2 and 2.4 Defenders.
l've been looking for a Puma 110 and have noticed that the 2.4 version seems a lot cheaper than the 2.2 even if it's a really nice example.

For instance l was looking at a 2015 2.2 last week advertised at £32,995 and l've just seen a 2010 2.4 in similar condition at £21,995.

Also the very low mileage (under 10,000) 2.2' SW's seem to sell at £40,000+ but there's been a 2007 3,600 mile 2.4 XS 110 SW on sale for over 12 months initially at £39,995 and now £35,000 and it's still not sold.

l thought there wasn't much difference between the two, in fact a dealer in Macclesfield told me the 2.2 "lacks torque" and the 2.4 is better.

Each to their own but it’s probably people chasing the latest ones possible. Tax is probably another thing with that old debate.
2.4 for me, personally - just because there’s no DPF.

The later ones seem to be rusting quicker also. Whether that’s because JLR knew they were ending production so cut back on corrosion protection etc (money saving)

There’s no right answer. I’d just buy the best example for your budget. I’d save £10k and buy the low mileage 2.4 and leaves money to improve it.

There’s no noticeable difference between engine output/delivery. 2008 2.4 110 Utility Station Wagon XS.

Having run both, I tend to prefer the 2.4,

If maintaining the vehicle yourself there engine bay is not quite as jam packed, the 2.2 always seems like they just jammed the lot in and started cutting the bulkhead until they got clearance or the DPF.

There’s also some cost cutting and strange decisions. The late bulkhead hinge captive nuts for example are now causing problems causing rust (just worked on a 2015 with a gaping hole in bulkhead pillar above the bottom hinge). Cheap centre diff, going back to 2 pin diffs in front of 110 etc.

Going from 2.2 into 2.4 the 2.4 does seem slightly less refined but more “Land Rover”

Can’t comment on a 2.2, but what I can say is 2.4 related, and I’m glad there isn’t a DPF. _\Hennessey|Venom| F5/___

I run a 2.2 90 and it doesn't miss a beat.

I've also had a 2.4 which was also great. Out of the 2 the 2.2 does feel that it drives better but this could all be psychological and nothing more than the 2.2 being a newer vehicle.

The 2.4 was rust proofed by a previous owner using a company that specialises in Defenders using Dinitrol. I was surprised that there wasn't more of an attempt by Land Rover to rust proof the 2.2 better, particularly the rear wheel arches?

A| lot of 2.2's appear to be "Garage Queens" with folk buying them as an investment that they only take out at the weekend in good weather? Mine is a very usable daily drive.

I happily run a 2.4. That said, 2.4s are just older. Things deteriorate over time so any 2.4 is likely to have more issues (hopefully minor) than a 2.2. Simple math.

Well, l am still looking.

l will take a 2.2 or a 2.4 so long as it isn't in the £700 road tax category.

l would, if l could find a decent 110 XS, there's plenty of TDCi's but not seen any TD5's

But also the TDCi would be better for business use.

i prefer the 2.4 which is personal preference really, appearance can be altered but service history and maintenance can't, buy the best looked after and then start your journey customising and upgrading Very Happy 2023 Defender L663 V8

A major plus, hear in Ausiie at least, is that the 2.2 has the 6 speed gearbox, making for much more relaxed engine revs when cruising.
