I agree Procta.

The CRT bin off was probably one of the biggest environmental faux pas’s us normal people have managed to pull off in the last few years.

Perfectly good tellies scrapped because we all wanted something that looked more modern.

You couldn’t sell them. No one wanted them. Our local tip, sorry, recycling centre had containers full of CRT tellies probably sent off to India for kids to smash up for the precious metals inside. Add on to that computer monitors as well!

The strange thing was a lot of those first generation flat screen TV’s gave a much inferior picture to the old CRT’s.

Phones were another commodity which we used to throw away after our contract ran out every 12 months. I have to say my consumption of phones is the lowest it has ever been. I’ve had my iPhone now for seven years. As long as it keeps updating and working well, I will be in no hurry to change. The battery is still pretty good. I really don’t need all this AI rubbish so if that is the main selling point, I’m not sold.

Yours faithfully, Greta Rolling with laughter

I was forced into upgrading my TV as the parents " wanted " their old LCD TV, which replaced the same
CRT TV I bought, after buying their replacement CRT. They replaced the LCD with a 60 in plasma, i was not happy about binning off the CRT TVs, because its all a con.
I ended up saying sod that, i will get my own replacement, Plasma which i have had for 11 years, and there is f..k all wrong with it, Thumbs Up When it goes boom then it will be replaced, hell i even had a DVD player that lasted 22 years, i nearly cried as i had it that long, it was the laser that had bit the dust. The one i have currently isn't a patch on it, and its Blue Ray.

Mobiles are binned off way to early as you say, and i think the desk PC is going that route now, due to how the windows is written now, with the BIOS integration crap.
They cannot do Censored all with PC hardware so bin off the full system, even though it can run the later OS, with a few commands. My current pc is pushing 10 years old now, and i built it for windows 10 back in 2016. I am planning on doing the same thing again that will see the system off another 10 years i hope, for windows 11. My Current hardware i will pass on to someone who plays with PCs. I am or was software sided. But with the loss of interest of the past 16 yrs i have practically on the very last threads with windows 10, id have changed OSes well before now. Defender TD5 90 ---/--- Peugeot 306 HDI hatch back

On the subject of CRTs, I still have a Phillips TV from around 2002 that's in daily use. It was passed to me by my parents when they got a flatscreen and it's nice just as a piece of furniture in wood effect cabinet and has all surround sound built in speakers so sounds great.

I endure much mockery for running this from some people as they just don't get why I haven't gone for a modern TV...

I am still convinced the picture on this old TV is better that modern screens and I like it, however eventually it will die so I will be forced to go to a modern, but until then it's staying put! Cool 2004 Defender 90 Td5 CSW

A good CRT would wipe the floor with an early LCD TV in regards picture quality. (Apart from edge purity and picture size) LED was an improvement but with approximately 50 diffused LED's shining behind the display you were never going to achieve the black level of a CRT.

Also as you increased the screen size the picture quality reduced as you were on the same definition, a bit like blowing up a photograph. Picture processing software got better over the years and then HD moved the game forward.

The Philips widescreen CRT TV's were the best but the tube had a habit of failing, it would develop a short usually on the red gun. A few sharp taps with the rubber handle of a screwdriver on the neck of the tube would sometimes clear the fault at least for a while.

Plasma was the nearest to CRT. I've still got my 2010 LG 50" and the picture on that is still better than the new ones l am installing for customers.

OLED is a step forward as it doesn't have a backlight and is the only thing l would buy now, but 90% of customers don't seem to care, or notice.
They will only notice the size of the screen, 85" is the latest big ticket and so long as you are not a BBC cameraman you'll think it's great.
HD and of course UHD helps a lot particularly at this size, SD falls seriously short when you get past about 50".

There have been only two customers ever complained about the picture quality on their new LCD TV and they were both BBC camera operators.

A lot complain about the sound though. As TV's are now so thin, there's nowhere for anything other than tiny speakers and so the sound is often terrible and you need a sound bar or other audio system.

Take off the front panel with PCB and list it on Ebay....you'll get £60-80 for it.

The main PCB (behind the front panel) is a fairly common failure and it's not repairable as the PCB is encapsulated in clear resin.

List it as a BIN maybe £68. Engineers will have a customer waiting and won't want to wait a week to find out if they've "won" an auction.

Thanks for the update, hopefully the new washer will give you enough years of trouble free use so that when it fails you have a chose to repair or replace.

To continue the white good stories.. when I was a younger man on a tight budget we bought a Miele dishwasher used only to find the pump was leaking (people selling broken goods - not very ethical). Got a used pump online for £30 and replaced. All good. We gifted it to our neighbours when we moved to a house with a build on unit and they enjoyed it daily for another 10 years.

Miele is good stuff, highest repairability score too and good parts availability. We are better off now and have been buying Miele whenever possible. Great products.

Hopefully the new one will give many years of services.

After seeing some videos on removing the spider it was quite an in-depth process...,probably most of the day to take apart and rebuild. The part itself was not bad, I think it was around £140.
A new machine with delivery and 5 year warranty was £520. 1999 Defender TD5 110

Wouldn't it be possible to tig weld the cracked alu spider, or wouldn't it be strong enough? Or unbalanced perhaps? I'm sure a guy with a portable Tig welding machine wouldn't be too expensive to call on site, alternatively bring the washer to his workshop? Defender 130 HCPU Td5 MY2000

Usually the spider cracks because it is so badly corroded that welding is impossible.
Its an aluminum spider on a stainless steel drum - think galvanic corrosion. Fabric detergent is as bad as road salt. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing
