How to tell if an engine is mapped?
I have bought a 110 2.4 TDCI, and compared to my wife's 2.2 TDCI it has torque in spades. I can drive it around the country roads in 3rd or 4th, and it just pulls.

Do the 2.4's really that much more torque than the 2.2?

When I was changing the radiator, I see it has a JE Engineering Intercooler fitted, along with an ITG air filter. When I changed the oil pan, I saw someone had marked the conrod journal caps with 1,2,3,4 in red paint. Not sure if these marks are on a normal build.

The previous owner has no knowledge of it being mapped, as he never had it very long.

How can I tell if it's been mapped?

Thanks
John

Je use itg filters. Probably is mapped by them. Unusual bit not unheard of to have e an uprated intercooler on a std map. Cheers

Given that performance, assume mapped and get a pyrometer fitted before you crack the head.

As standard it won’t have writing on the engine components. Someone has been in there. Thumbs Up

Write to JE (or ITG, Coventry, same parent) company and ask them - only downside with a positive result-you will then have to inform your insurance

I’ve tried to track them down, and they appear to have closed down. 🙁

I'm thinking that it might be possible to get an idea by looking at scan tool live data if the map has involved deleting functions like egr.. that will be obvious by looking at the demanded egr.. the figure won't change..
If the map hasn't involved deleting,
I'm again thinking that scope data may show up some features in the injection timing and rail pressure , but only by comparing with standard mapping traces..

surely simplest is to get a power run at a local Dyno and you'll see if it makes reasonably more power instantly

My Ultra-gauge shows increased Hp and torque when the BAS map is active vs the base map. Never know how accurate the figures are but they make me happy 😂 2.4TDCI 90 - everyday brilliance

Member Revd makes a very good point. In the event of an accident etc your insurance would very likely be invalid if the vehicle has had a map but the insurance company has not been informed of such.
A minor accident may not cause an investigation, but a fatality, personal injury for expensive accident, even if not your fault, could.

Insurance companies will look for any reason not to pay out so won’t care that you say you did not know. In fact (unfortunately) this topic is evidence that you suspect you do have a map and could be used by your insurance company against you.

I don’t intend this to cause you stress, so please don’t shoot the messenger, however I think it does need pointing out so you are aware of the risks .

A good tuner, such as Bell Auto Services , will be capable of reading your ECU, advising if the existing Map is not standard and potentially the author of the Map. I would advocate you contact BAS or other similar respected tuner to see if they will perform this function for you.

Ps. Given you have an uprated intercooler and air Filter I would also advocate that you inform your insurance company of such as they are also classed as modifications. I would also look for other potential mods such as brakes etc that the insurance company needs to be made aware of.

I am on the same boat with a friend´s 2.4. He bought it used and he has no clue who did the job. I`va never driven a Defender like his. Absolutely awesome remap. I thought the remap was done by IRB but of course I never got a reply.

So the only way to check it is by plug in the ECU into a Kess machine or similar.

PS. However, the EGR was not disabled. Puma 110" SW

As above

Call your insurance and tell them it's got a remap on it. You should be okay to report to them that it's an "engine chip 10-25%" which won't affect your premium at all with some companies.

Somebody told me, that cheap tuners just rise the injection pressure.
You can simply read that out.

Ypu've already found some mods that make it most probable.
What about thé EGR and CAT ?

On paper, the 2.4 and the 2.2 have same performance, but the poor little 2.2 need to squeeze harder to push its exhausts out.

Incidentally I type this from my bathroom, so I know what a 2.2 might feel. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing
