Turbo whistle
Is it possible for a turbo to whistle a bit intermittently (e.g. after a remap Whistle ) without being b*ggered?
Cheers

A turbo should only whistle under load, are you sure it's the turbo and not a leaking exhaust manifold? --

It only whistles under load, mostly in second gear. Turbo would seem more likely (?) as the remap has only been on two days (no whistle before). Really p*ssed off, as I have just put the factory map back on again and the whistle is still there - I guess something is broken now Big Cry

What mods have you done?

Mine as standard whistled...... Am I right in believing from another thread that you have fitted a noise blanket?

Could just be that you haven't noticed it before?

No engine mods, except an Alive remap done on Thursday. The remap had some issues (notably vibration around 2000rpm) but I was going to get them sorted out on Monday (too late, I fear).
You're right - I have fitted a noise blanket but it's effect is moderate - the whistling is so loud I would definitely have noticed it before and it's too loud to be ignored...
Oh - and it only seems to be when the engine is hot.

Sounds very much as mentioned above then. Manifolds are known to warp on some occasions. Maybe it was on its way out and loading the map has just finished it off.

Thanks. Can you give me any idea how serious it is to fix a turbo manifold?
I will take it to LR in Landsberg and hopefully get some payback for the other dealer being so Censored ... Tell someone you love them today because life is short.

If it is the Turbo manifold that has warped then Nakatanenga do an annealed copper gasket to replace the OEM one. Remember to replace the studs and nuts at the same time.
Is there a drop in power or just a more audible turbo whistle? With the Alive remap the engine is definitely quieter than the standard tune. So with the addition of a quieter engine and the blanket then it may be reasonable to assume the noise was always there, just that you couldn't hear it pre remap? It is easy enough to check the turbo manifold for signs of a leak, just look for a build up of soot from the area around the manifold. If there is none there, you don't have a leaking manifold.

Power seems okay, just the whistle for now but its definitely new (took blanket off and original map) and pretty loud.
Need to figure out where the turbo is now - think it's right front (UK driver's side) with the big-ass hose coming back into it (yup - idiot question Embarassed ) Tell someone you love them today because life is short.

On a RHD defender the turbo is located on the offside of the engine block underneath a heat shield.

Yup - the rusty bit - thanks.
So I will have to take the shield off to see it properly. Drat Sad
Is it only the lower/exhaust end gasket (square) that goes?
Cheers,
Matt

No, it is the manifold depicted as A in the bottom diagram. And here is the link for the gasket:

Aha! The one you almost can't see Wink Makes sense if it's a centrifugal turbine Embarassed
Thanks. Have you ever changed one? If so, how painful is it?
I'm always eager to learn new tricks and I'd rather use the improved Nak. version but it looks as if you have to get the whole exhaust manifold off? I guess I'd better let LR do it under warranty... Tell someone you love them today because life is short.

Thank you MOG. I didn't even notice changing gear whilst listening for the turbo whine!
