07 plate alarm question
I've just picked up a new, to me, 07 plate defender 110. My question: is it possible to activate the alarm/immobiliser except for the internal movement sensor? I need to secure the vehicle as best as possible but also will need to be able to leave my dogs in the vehicle at the same time.

Thanks in advance for your helpful comments.

This has been covered numerous times in the past so if you do a search all will become clear. In the mean time the best option is to cover the rearward facing volumetric sensor with a bit of insulating tape and then you can use the key fob as normal. This is what I do for when I have the dogs in the defender. Other options are to disable the volumetric sensor with a diagnostic tool which allows access to the 10AS module. Easiest option though is the taped sensor. Whistle Thumbs Up

Easiest option is to just unplug the cable from the back of the unit. Richard

True, though you will have no volumetric sensors at all if you do that. However covering up the rearward facing sensor means the front one is still functioning and you don't need to remove any trim. Plus when the dogs are not in the back all you need to do is remove the tape to allow full volumetric alarm coverage.

I thought you just lock it with key, not remote. This sets alarm and immobiliser, but not the volumetric sensor.

As Landy Andy says lock with the key and you can leave the sun roof open and the windows down a bit for the dogs and the alarm won't go off unless some one puts their arm in and tryes to unlock the door on the door card, in my case the will also get their hands bitten or licked depending on which one of our mutts i've got with me at the time Embarassed and its not the way most people think, the Rotty cross is as soppy as and just wants to be every ones friend, the cute looking little Jack Russel on the other hand, you wont be getting in my Land Rover if she is lose in there don't even bother locking the doors if both are in there. If everything is under control you are not going fast enough.

Sorry, have to disagree with you on that. Have a read of this: http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic5817.html

I may be wrong, but I though that the Defender was like the Disco 2 and the immobiliser is always activated and the alarm was always armed, i.e., locking with the plip activates perimetric and volumetric protection, and locking with the key activates perimetric only.

So if the Defender is locked with the key and a door or the bonnet is then opened, I though that the alarm would still sound. I have not tried this though.

I've just been out and tested this scenario and can confirm that the alarm is not armed when you lock the door with the key. However the immobiliser will still be active as you still need the plip connected to the ignition key to start the Landy and get the immobiliser to de activate.
So I opened both drivers side front and rear windows and locked the landy with the key. Opened rear door from inside (simulated broken window to gain access) with no alarm activation. Did the same with the drivers door which unlocks all doors and no alarm sounded. Jumped in the landy and locked the car with the key on the outside and opened the bonnet. Again no alarm sounded. I did suspect this to be the case as the alarm sensors are independent of the door central locking procedure with the key, however if set in the 10AS module the key can disarm the alarm set by the plip when unlocking the vehicle. If you do a little research into the 10AS alarm unit you will see that the plip and 10AS use a rolling code each time the alarm is activated (this is to help stop someone cloning your plip code). If the alarm could be set with both the key and the plip, the rolling codes would go out of sync with the plip meaning it wouldn't work and would have to be synchronised each time this happened. I dont see in the 10AS unit a way built in to differentiate between key and fob in alarm activation and managing the rolling code to compensate for key or plip activation. I guess it comes down to cost.

Yep, agree with Brian. As far as I'm aware there is no alarm activation when locking with the key alone, the fob has to be used for the alarm to be activated. Similarly, if the alarm was activated with the fob and then someone tries to unlock with the key, the alarm will go off - as has happened to me when other people have gone to get something out of the car!

Edit: sorry Bri, didn't read your above post fully - you've answered the second part of my post as well! Good man! Thumbs Up 2005 Td5 | 90 Station Wagon | Tonga Green

Green Machine, it may be worth checking too see if someone has either been playing around with the alarm settings or the dealer did not set it up properly in the PDI. The normal is for the "Key Disarm" option being allowed in the 10AS to allow the alarm to be disabled with the key after being set with the fob. IMHO I think this is so you can get the defender going again if the fob battery dies or the fob doesn't work/lost it etc, thus allowing you to disable the alarm and give you the opportunity to enter the EKA code to temporarily get around the passive immobilizer purely as a get you home option. Though "Key Mobilize" must also be allowed for you to do this.

Cheers Brian, that's interesting. I just assumed it was an unavailable function i.e the key would not ever disable the alarm. Is that the same for Td5's? I don't have any kind of diagnostics kit, but might ask my mechanic when it's next in for a service later this month. I can certainly see it being beneficial if I ever do have to get into it if the key fob has failed. Thumbs Up 2005 Td5 | 90 Station Wagon | Tonga Green

The TD5 with the factory fit alarm uses the 10AS module as well so the options will still be available in the settings menu. Thumbs Up

Brian.

Edit: If it is an after market alarm fitted then please ignore all of above Whistle
