United Kingdom 2011 Defender 110 Puma 2.4 USW Keswick Green
In a nutshell, its is just too far removed from the existing product. With the Range Rover the linage is clear, from the various version of the classic (which I think they managed to keep looking fresh right up until the end) the P38 which had certain styling cues in common, and then the new ones and also the sport, which all hark back to their predecessors. They got it so right at each step, even if the P38 was not as good as it could have been. Personally I have no issues with them but have never owned one.
Even the Freelander has a clear design evolution from the original version, to the facelift, to the replacement model.
This thing just doesn't look like a Defender in any way, if you covered the badges up I think many people, fans and MOPs, would not know who it was made by, or assume it was a far-eastern manufacturer.
Jeep still make a Jeep that looks like a Jeep, so I see no reason for Landrover to do the same. This is of course not the first concept Defender, but is probably not the last to just fall by the wayside as rejected. 2011 110 USW

Still if I can't learn to love the new Defender when it goes into production I can always build one of these instead...

Exactly my thoughts MrTod - I'm growing increasingly fond of the four door (Ibex - not the DC100). Peter

I think thats a slightly shopped pic of the Ford Bronco concept. Shows who has been paying attention (Ford) and who hasn't (Landrover) eh?

It's brutal. Beginning to like that!

Better, but now looks like a Land Cruiser or something (still an improvement, though). Doesn't look or feel like a Defender.

Im sorry i can see the defender likeness, maybe if they had done more of a halfway house like with the Disco and Range Rover...but there is definite likeness Mike

I was pretty negative about it in an earlier post. I appreciate that a new defender is on the way, it's been a long time coming. I'm sure it'll be a fantastic vehicle. I reckon this is just a very very early prototype.
It's certainly got a reaction , which is exactly what publicity is all about. A clear path has been drawn on which way to take this project. I guess if they want to take back some market share from the Asian pick-up sector, it needs to be more car like in terms of drivability. Maybe even make a loss for the first few years..
Make a car that's just so much better and more desirable than a bog standard pick-up at the same price level, clean up on the Market for sure.
I'm picking on "pick-ups" because where I live in Cornwall pretty much all working cars that aren't Defenders are them. Plus I've driven a Hilux in Africa and it pains me to say it ,they're comfortable. I'm sure this is the main factor in it.
Which makes me question why the ride of the defender wasn't sorted out a bit sooner ? 110 HT TD5 - 110 XS SW Puma

My wish list is good economy but not at the expense of capacity. 2.2 liters is the bare minimum for a farm tow vehicle.

I also don't want to see curb weight drop, heavyweight components are key. Yes, economy is nice but 28-30 is plenty, I don't need 40.

Make sure the brakes aren't so big that we can't fit 16 or max 17" wheels.

Strengthen roof pillars.

Try and retain that Defender look AND ability.

Offer an automatic gearbox for those of us with knee issues. Years of driving a Ford 8830 and a TD5 with 120k of slow miles on it takes its toll.
