2.4 2007 Rough idle worse in cold weather
I have searched here and tried on another post but not sure its had much exposure lately so after some help with a new post.

Vehicle is running well no other problems 28/29mpg which is normal for it.

On a cold engine start the idle is lumpy, similar symptoms to a load being applied to the engine (like AC going on but a higher load) engine rpm drops a 100rpm then fluctuates a bit. it does this until warm at idle and low engine speeds ie moving down the drive.

Once warmed up it runs and idles fine, subsequent resatrts when hot/warm it doesnt do it

This morning was the coldest morning we have had in a while and it was lumpy enough to almost stall the vehicle (but it caught itself)

on other threads the VCV and fuel pressure valve are mentioned, how can i check them and would they be affected by ambient temp? ie lower the ambient the worse the cold idle is.

I dont have a means for live data reading. Cheers

Have you tried reading any codes? I'm certainly no expert but I'd not be surprised if you had a glowplug issue.

Try this, it should at least clean everything through.

I don't know a way you visually check those valves. On mine, a diagnostic tool shows the fuel pressure fluctuating wildly. I have the same problem, suspect the VCV, but as it doesn't do it when it's warm it's not bothered me for a few months. I'll now doubt be contemplating changing the VCV again in a few weeks. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS

I have lumpy fluctuating idle in winter when the engine is cold. It occasionally happens when warmed up, but to a lesser degree. Virtually never happens in warmer weather, if it does it is much less severe. Using Millers Dieselmax additive seems to alleviate the problem a little.

My theory, and it is only my theory, is that the piston in the VCV gets dirty or corroded and starts to get sticky. For some reason temperature and/or the extra lubricating properties of the additive alleviate it to some extent.

I have a new vcv to go on but I haven't done it because just because I haven't got the tool needed to programme a new one, I forget how annoying it is and I've been busy. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS

I had similar last winter also but haven't seen it as much to worry about.
Again likely the VCV but the programming is a pain in the backside so I see that point of view..

I think it's likely that in the winter the diesel waxes more and everything inc as suggested above the VCV workings become more sticky.
Diesel also has different additives in the winter I believe due to possible freezing temperatures. Diesel$ Live$ Matter. ⛽️🛢️👨‍🔧🧰⚙️ RED, WHITE & BOOST! 🇬🇧

Same issue here...

I've been considering changing the VCV as well, now that the Nanocom (version 1.33) has support for "pump learning" for the Puma 2.4 (< 2012).

Has anybody used these (new) features in Nanocom, pump and injector pilot correction learning?

(injector pilot correction learning was added a while ago whereas the pump learning is a brand new feature in Nanocom software v1.33) “A Land Rover immobilized is a moral defeat for the driver and bad publicity for the vehicle, […] it's up to you to do justice to your Land Rover!” - Land Rover Driving Technique.

That's grabbed my attention! I have a Nanocom. How did you find out and how do I upgrade mine? 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS

I've found out in the release notes for the new version, I've been waiting for ages for this feature to be added Smile

The Nanocom forum also has some discussion about that feature and where it was added (was not obvious at first in which menu entry it was to be found...)

Nanocom forum is here: http://forum.nanocom-diagnostics.com/

You can get the SW update from the restricted area:

https://www.nanocom-diagnostics.com/restricted

Additional information (and how to upgrade) can be found either on their forum or in the documentation (including videos)

Change the vcv, THEN do the pump re-learn & injector pilot correction. This will most likely solve the rough idle, if your glow plugs aren't working well it will rough idle for 10 seconds odd after starting cold and then should pick up as normal.

I have the BAS2 RRC tool and can do the pump learn and injector correction in a matter of minutes from my iPhone.

My very quick review of the vcv change..
