So I have the engine out and the head off
Hi Guys,

After a bit of advice. I have the engine out of my 110 (TD5 2005) and am in the process of doing the head gasket and clutch. I originally stripped the engine out due to a leaking FPR, diesel on the clutch and a mystery coolant loss.

A few questions: the bellhousing was lined with an oil like but diesel smelling substance which I assume is diesel from the FPR mixed with clutch dust but will change the main oil seal on the block to be safe. Does this sound familiar to anyone?

What steps should I take on the head strip down? Currently only the valves are left in place but the inlet valves were ringed with baked on goop which I assume is courtesy of the ERG (now gone). Do you reckon I should have them out and relap them myself or get the machine shop to do it? How do i make sure the fuel supply to the injectors stays clean?

I have the core plug out from the exhaust manifold side as I am trying to eliminate any sources of coolant leakage, what is the correct way to seal this when I put it back?

I am also replacing the waterpump.

Whilst I am there I was wondering if there are any other jobs I should do whilst access is good?

Cheers

James

Inlet manifold nice and clean and no oil in the intercooler. Might put an alisport one on Wink

Thinking of replacing the cooling hoses as they are worn in places.

That's all well and good if you can smuggle it into the kitchen without a certain someone noticing.
Then trying to explain why you have a sudden urge to use the dishwasher all night!

How do I know? Whistle 80" 80" 86" 88" 90"

Wanted, Forward Control Anything considered.

Thanks for the pictures - great to see !

If you are ticking off problem areas whilst it's out - you could check the oil pump bolt, uprate the exhaust manifold studs, new o rings in the fuel cooler, and check the oil cooler for corrosion ?

Only had my td5 a year and a half but have done quite a bit of reading on the subject, so when I did my clutch-flywheel I put clear silicone onto the face of the bell housing when I replaced it so if you get a diesel leak then it won't run into the bell housing and contaminate the clutch.
