Poll figures are showing the problems lie with the 07 & 08 modles with the old clutch design!

Still not representative as we all know still some 2009-10-11 models show failure.

FYI the builder of our cheese clutches is some german-italian-uk mix

Update: I think I found something about the friction plates. Apparenltly there are (at least) 3 versions. Early one with gray teflon bearing and two later types with white teflon. All differ on the srping coil types, being the latest with "stronger" coils (less loops). I bet LR was using #2 randomly up to 2009-2010, and hopefully not any longer. Now, stronger plates means louder clonks..... Whistle Puma 110" SW

Latest info from the manufacturer.

"Please see the information that we can supply in relation to your questions.

There has been 3 designs of driven plate, all with different modifications to specific parts of the assembly, not just relating to the friction plate. The latest design is that of 2011, which your item will be.

We cannot answer your question regarding the functional use of the springs, or explain how they perform and at what stage of the clutch operation, as this falls within the controls we have in place regarding security of technical data"

2012 Defender 110 Puma 2.4 XS CSW Stornoway Grey
My '61 Sept 2011 Land Rover 110 XS failed at 11922 miles, that was three weeks on Monday. No firm date has been given for the return as they have not got the parts, despite escalation through Land Rover UK.
Took Enterprise and Land Rover two days to supply a six seater required for our holiday and two weeks and 4 days to supply a Land Rover model that was adequate for our four kids and a dog. Our holiday was written off as a result and they knew this.
The clutch peddle was low on delivery which means all the way from the end of the line to the dealer and through PDI and all the way through to the point of delivery, nobody, not in Solihull and not at the dealers in Guildford, bothered to resolve the problem which has been lurking inside my clutch housing since the birth of the vehicle.
Their quality control at point of manufacture has not improved in the 10 years since I worked there implementing the then new Discovery line.
Their dealer network is as bad as any other I have experienced.
Their customer service is not all that clever.
Their product has too many known issues.
The ONLY reason to buy this vehicle is the lack of depreciation.
Not happy Big Cry

The dealer arn't saying and as its a warranty claim they wouldn't give me the parts as tey have to Land Rover to supportt the claim. Land Rover are keeping this one to them selves.!!

This may be useful to some, feedback from one of the local indies when faced with a clutch issue and the price of a new from the stealers:

Quote:
a Puma came in with a thud sound when starting and switching off.

somewhere along the line the limitations of the clutch was exceeded and the centre of the clutch broke loose but not completely disintegrated.

searched high and low and eventually with the help of the guys at Valeo tracked a suitable replacement clutch plate. it takes the clutch plate from a Ford Ranger TD just for info purposes.

followup from the indie:

Quote:
the clutch plate only retails at around R800.
the Ford clutch is more robust as well.
LR is R 4700 for the kit

FFS, it's not rocket science! You would think that after 60+ yrs of vehicle design they would know how to design a clutch Evil or Very Mad --

I wonder though if the Ford/Mazda TD has a dual mass flywheel.

Anyway, most fine engines have dual mass flywheels. The LR clutch with central dampers is a cheapo design. Puma 110" SW
