Aircon extended grill surround fitment?
Apologies for being a total newbie here but I recently purchased a replacement aircon grill for my 90 and I notice the fitment seems off? I assume the panel should sit flush with the front of the wings but the grill surround is clashing with the bracket?

Before I go trimming the surround to recess further am I missing something obvious Laughing or is it totally normal and that's how it is...

Here's some pretty poor pics to try and show what I mean

I did try to improve mine, but it was hidden behind a soft A bar so didn't bother me too much.... When I refit after junking the A bar it might be a different matter 😂

Mine fits ok. The grille has kind of the profile for the light surrounds, and that abuts the light surrounds and looks right on mine. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

That gap is hidden by the headlight surround:

If the AC grill you have bought is after market you might have to trim/file down some of the plastic to make the fit better. I had to do this along the internal edges that run up between the wings and radiator support. It wasn't much but it fits with a better panel gap now.

I presume you have the correct lower fitting brackets as well?!

Yours seems to fit flush at the bottom? Mine is sticking out a bit more, maybe ill try and adjust the bracket before trimming to see if theres any adjustment on that.

The grill is factory according to the people i got it off (Nene overland) and the lower brackets are what came on the car (factory AC). ill have to try and do more tinkering to see what the issue is.. Crying or Very sad

Welcome to defender ownership Very Happy the bottom brackets probably need a bit of fettling ,beware the originals are made of cheese and rust away in months ....you could fashion your own from ss or buy a lr set from here

or buy a stainless steel set from yrm(a great source of improved defender stuff)

There's some more detail here that might help: https://www.defender2.net/forum/post854635.html#854635 Darren

Okay so it should definitely fit way better than that. Mine is factory and has always been a perfect tight fit. If you are adding this after market you need to add an extra thick washer (pic I am pointing at) to affix the slam panel to the fenders, which creates a larger gap to slide the grill surround in between the fender and slam panel.

Good luck Thumbs Up

Thank you ill give that a go! I like the fixings you used for the top of the surround, did they come as part of a set or did you buy separately?
