The best person to speak to would be Pete Bell at BAS... He's the fount of all knowledge when it comes to Puma tuning..

Switzerland 2009 Defender 110 Puma 2.4 SW Stornoway Grey
Hi

I can give you my personnal feedback. I allready tried many exhaust setup on my 2.4 puma. Never put it on a dyno test so it's just based on personnal feeling. I have got a Alive stage 2 so remap and bigger intercooler.

First thing I did was replacing the mid pipe with a straight one. It makes no difference at all. Performance looks exactly the same and sound didn't change.

Secondly I installed a decat down pipe and with it and the straight mid pipe not a great change too. You only will only earing a more free exhaust sound and gasoil will smell like an old truck when you are behind. The noise will be like a sport diesel engine when you give more gas.

I tried to replace the last pipe too with a straight exhaust pipe so the line was totaly free. In the three cases I didn't notice any performance difference. That's more about sound. When your exhaust line is totaly straight it looks like a tractor engine when you accelerate with full gas throttle and it add a "depressure" sound when you leave the gas.

Finally I have read that full straight exhaust line was not good for a turgo compressed diesel engine so I transformed my mid straight pipe in mid small silencer. With this setup it looks a bit similar when you you put decat, straight mid pipe and leave the small rear silencer pipe. Sound it similar but I think that the stock small rear silencer is less free than we think.

The I will probably try to put my stock rear pipe to see if there is any difference. That's the only possibility I didn't try.

In all cases I can say that the traight exhaust line is more for sound than performance.

And all engines are different, because if you only remove the mid exhaust on a td5 replacing with straight pie, the sound will totaly change. On the PUMA it doesn't make any difference.

And I just contacted Alive to know why they didn't retail the hybrid turbo for 2.4, because I was thinking about turbo problem on mine. They answered that the max performance of the 2.4 PUMA is possible to reach with good remap bigger intercooler and stock turbo. That's why they stoped to retailing the hybrid turbo. The 2.2 Puma seems to be totaly different. I think we can trust Alive Tuning. They know what they are talking about.

best regards

Thanks for the feedback Okan Thumbs Up

On the Td5, I can report that removing the centre box makes a noticeable difference to low-speed turbo spool up, I saw that both on my 110 double cab and Disco 2.

On my Puma 2.4, removing the cat did not improve performance, but it does positively impact the EGTs and cabin temperature.

Once I have removed the centre box next week, I will report back. I will keep the centre box just in case and if there is an issue, I will put it back on. --

I have a straight through from DPF back that cost a mere 150 fitted. Full stainless with a 3" tip. Whistle

Makes a bit more noise than normal but nothing major. Plus its still MOT compliant and i know its as free flowing as it can legally be.

I wasn't too fussed about the power increase. I wanted more grunt, I probably to neither but for 150 it was worth a go, not 10x that amount Idea

Roy5695,

Where did you buy it from? Or where was it fitted?
I'm interested in doing it to mine straight throug but leaving the DPF on

Cheers

I've just fitted a Terrafirma stainless centre section to my 2.4 Puma and the subjective conclusions are:
1: the (sort of) whistle from the induction under part load has gone;
2: except at startup the exhaust note is unchanged - a bit louder on first firing but immediately goes as quiet as it was before;
3: it seems quieter inside in normal use (no baffles rattling in the main box?);
4: it seems to pull better under part throttle conditions;
5: hill climbing is better - 3rd gear instead of 2nd.
