New engine - or other options?
After a bit of a nightmare breakdown in fog in the dark on the A303, just had the bad news from the local LR dealer that they’re recommending a new engine. Initially found a faulty injector which was replaced but didn’t fix the lack of drive and rattly engine so they did some more diagnostics and found no compression on one cylinder and that particulate contamination from the faulty injector had been the cause.

There was maybe a minute of warning of an issue while i was driving before all drive went mid way up a relatively shallow hill.

They’ve quoted £7.5k for the new engine but before going ahead with that are there any alternative solutions to look into? Will be getting quotes other places, including independents but any Somerset way recommendations would be good.

Mileage was c35k (2012 truck) so not best pleased at a low mileage failure.

Had to have a new engine a while ago and found M&D Engineering were able to supply my Indi at a very good price.

LR surplus parts can supply and fit if necessary. These are the guys that sell on the bits that twisted take out (sister company).

Marcus Williams at MWM machines has a puma engine that was a take out when fitting a BMW 6cyl, would be a lot cheaper, or even fit the BMW engine, again much cheaper. 80" 1948

I'd consider Devon 4x4. Transport aside, I would investigate.
Sometimes it pays to go further afield, even if it costs transport.

I wouldn't certainly look around, main dealers are not as good as they'd lead you to believe and prices are rip off.
I had my clutch replaced once, and they didn't even tighten up the lighting harness Ground when re-fitting.
It was finger tight and dirty.

So I was out and about one day with the lights, exterior and interior lighting up like a Christmas tree and flashing due to the ground issue on a smaller earth strap.
Dangerous in fact.
I had to fix this myself, after paying a significant over inflated sum too.

In this part of the world, there is a lot of artificially inflated prices, pretty much rip offs.

Even if my suggestion doesn't work out for you, I hope one solution someone here hopefully soles your issue.
Personally I think 35k mileage is unacceptable lifespan from LR, and in my book they should be doing it for you FOC warranty or not as it's not fit fit purpose. Diesel$ Live$ Matter. ⛽️🛢️👨‍🔧🧰⚙️ RED, WHITE & BOOST! 🇬🇧

That is shocking at that low mileage. Like Steve I'd be trying to get JLR to at least contribute!

Have a look at 4x4 Fabrications, they do various engine options. Might be a chance to look at alternatives Whistle James

My head went pop about 2 years ago now, (big turbo intercooler etc)

Half wanting it to go pop again... so i can justify fitting a BMW lump (should of done this last time wouldn't of cost that much more)

I actually had a LS3 on order but bottled it after prices started getting ridiculous, my chosen gearbox was circa ~8.5k

- I actually had it sent 160 miles away to have the work done somewhere i trusted than just any old local...

Nick Paxton is located between Frome and Shepton Mallet and would be my recommendation as a decent indy. They do a lot of Pumas (mine included) and he's a straight-up guy. http://www.nicholaspaxton.co.uk/

After losing confidence in my defender after a series of breakdowns but not being able to think of any other vehicle i'd want to replace it with i'm now booked in for a conversion to a 6 cylinder BMW 3 liter turbo diesel. Ive had a couple of BMWs with these M57 engines and i'm confident in their reliability and longevity. Their refinement, power and torque are beyond comparison to the tdci and i'll also be having the ZF 6HP gearbox meaning a 6 speed auto. Manual boxes are also an option, the BMW one or the Td5 (R380?) but i think this auto box in the defender will be incredible, it can even be diy remapped via software (two maps, one for normal, one for sport mode) should the mood take me further down the line. Engine will be making circa 300bhp 600nm and are famed for their ability to keep on going so long as they're serviced - my daily has 225k on the clock and still feels strong and tight and inspires huge confidence.

I looked into recon tdci engines (expensive and imo still crap [sorry 4cyl tdci fans]), 5 cylinder tdci (more expensive but perhaps a good choice), LS V8 (more expensive still and ive already got a V8 fuel bill in the houselhold) so the M57 was a simple choice plus i get a matched, solid and very good auto box.

I don't imagine that its going to be without its challenges but i really cant wait for the conversion to get started, im not doing it, i'm booked in with Marcus Williams MWMachines 4x4.

I'll be very interested to hear how this goes. I helped with a couple of Mazda SLT and Perkins 4182 conversions in the days of yore and now have a TDCI 2.4, which I'm looking after and runs OK but it's always nice to hear about the alternatives.
