I know it's an old thread but I have just noticed lazer tools seem to do a tool which is for Ford vehicles and the Freelander.....

Now as we have a Ford engine in the Defender I wonder if it will fit....

It comes with the correct size fittings so it should. Still expensive for what it is.

I've changed my fuel filter twice now and heeded the advice of a local independent who told me to make sure that when filling the filter to make sure that everything is totally clean so nothing gets in to the system, because the fuel your putting in has effectively bypassed the actual filter.
Luckily the times I've done it I've suffered no problems afterwards so maybe I was lucky. It really makes it so much easier filling it before refitting.

That's what concerns me. Fuel added to the filter is effectively bypassing the filter. Knowing how fine the tolerances are in the injection system I'd consider it a bit of a risk.

I don't want to spend loads on a rubber bulb and bit of pipe, so might try the removing a fuel feed on the engine and lightly pressuring the fuel tank to bleed some fuel through.

It really would have been easier if LR had spent the 20 quid or so it would have cost them to fit a feed pump !

do you honestly think in garages they muck about bleeding etc , 99% will tip the old filter into the new one then top up out of a jug

if your really lucky you might get it just filled from a jug of "clean" diesel ( must say this is what we do and do clean the jug out once in a while )

can never understand why they don't fit a small external electric pump something like a facet pump and just make them self prime

As the fuel pump is in the fuel tank and pushes the fuel up to the top of the engine the air in the system doesn't matter and will soon find it's way out. 2.2 90 XS

Apparently there is a pump on the 2.2 tdci but not the 2.4 did LR realise they had made a mistake? Or does the newer higher pressure pump have less sucking ability?

I stand corrected! Mines a 2.4 and there's def no pump in there.

As to JLR realising they made a mistake and improving the beast, if only! After 60 odd years we'd have perfection and nothing to spend all our free time & money fixing and improving and nothing at all to moan about!

Resurrecting a VERY old thread!

So - looking at the evidence.

"EDFORS" says "Had to bleed a TDCi today, found that the connector to the fuel line is exactly the same as on the air inlet filter for the Discovery 2! So I used an old filter and cut the connector off, then connected a bladder and some hoses£... and his pic:

This is the location of the connector that the bleed tool fixes to. Push the blue tabs in and pull the connector off the feed to the fuel pump.

OK...here's mine - just used it for the 1st time...

I bought the LR Part # WJN500110 as above, and chopped-off the threaded portion with a hacksaw. Bought 2m of clear pipe from ebay (internal diameter 8mm, outside diameter 11mm), and an 8mm Fuel Primer Bulb Hand Pump.

The WJN500110 fitted inside the plastic tube perfectly...so I realized it may be slightly smaller in diameter than needed. So I wrapped a small amount of insulating tape to make a nice push fit. Perfect Thumbs Up

I pumped 1.5 litres of diesel before the bubbles stopped appearing in the tube! (the new fuel filter was put on empty). Like others I caught the pumped diesel in a container, and put the diesel back in the tank...

It's a job I wasn't looking forwards to, but it all went smoothly.

The Defender started up fine but she did cough a little for a few seconds

Glad I have the pump now - I will carry in the vehicle alongside the jack just in case I ever run out of fuel Thumbs Up Defender "Puma" 2.4 110 County Utility (possibly the last of the 2.4's)

Just an FYI - if I did this again, instead of buying the WJN500110... I would try LR019009 (no guarantees but it looks more likely the right diameter / fit...and a bit cheaper too!)



It's off the end of one of the Puma fuel lines...and looks like it has the same female connector Thumbs Up

Next time I place an order for filters etc, I'll order one at the same time and try it (not paying £6 postage coz I am tight and just done the job anyway!) Defender "Puma" 2.4 110 County Utility (possibly the last of the 2.4's)

LR019009 is to short, going to try to turn it down in a lathe and remove the hex to make it longer.
