Why a full locker in the front, not an ATB?

I was thinking of something last night: I can get an atb for the rear P38 axle together with the distance ring and then try to put it in the front rover axle first...I hope this will work. This way I can look if I like it and by how much it affects the steering. it will be great if I can still put it in the rear in case I dont like it in the front. can this work?

I googled atb diff. Very Happy and it looks the same as a True-trac diff. I have a True trac in the front axle. You will hardly notice it on the road. If you are really sensitive you might feel that it wants to go easier to the straight ahead position when you floor the throttle.
I noticed this when I had it temporary replaced with a standard diff so I could rebuild the bearings off the diff. My 90 is lifted 7 cm so just below 3" without cranked steering arms etc. Without the True-trac it was more sensitive to changes in the road conditions.

If you are not a hard core offroader an ATB in the front and rear axle might be a very good set-up.
I have a Detroit Locker in the rear axle as I am more off-road biased.

I don't have TC. But I understand that TC doesn't really like a Detroit locker. However ATB/Truetracs work very good together with TC.

But coming back to my previous post any traction adding system ven TC, will make you slide sideways on a sideslope. Very Happy Roel

I have had front and rear Ashcroft ATBs fotted for over 100,000 miles. It doesn' t make any significant difference at all to the steering!

Gents, I have much less concerns now about atbs and road performance. After all the atbs are for a while on the market and your experience cant be neglected. I think I will end up with 2 atbs - front and rear. Having TC on mine may help a lot.
Meanwhile I have just replaced the center diff with an atb from Ashcroft.

The center atb diff from Ashcorft is a solid peace of engineering. I do not notice at all it is there during highway driving. First impressions on snow are very good. The car is very predictable and I dont have wheel spin at all. But it is too early to say now. I havent had the time to hit some side streets that are ice covered.

Hi All,

On both my 90s I have an Ashcroft ATB in my front diff and Ashcroft pegged ARB air locker in the rear, on my main 90 I also have an Ashcroft ATB centre diff, this vehicle also has ETC/ABS (both are TD5s), The main 90 is set up for long range camping trips around Europe. its still on standard suspension, anti roll bars etc. The second 90 is a bit more off road set up with Gwyn Lewis/OME suspension, Gigglepin rear arms. Both have Cooper ST Max 285.75 all terrains.

I am really happy with this set up, never noticed any negative effects and I love the ATBs as they just do their thing. If anything I noticed a slight tightening of the steering and a slight tendency to self centre when I first fitted them but now I don't notice, I would say this change was an improvement and in no way a negative.

The centre diff ATB is excellent for fast dirt tracks where maybe having the diff locked would be a bit much, sometimes its nice to have both options Smile In the snow and slow muddy dirt tracks I find a huge improvement over standard, it easier to tread lightly and still get through. I find the ETC comes on less now and its got to be pretty bad for me to engage the rear locker Smile
A big advantage is on sideslopes, if I have the rear locker in then it will slip but leaving it out and having the front with traction just seems to work better.

In short, for me this is now my "go to" set up that I would do again and have not experienced any negatives (once I had paid for it Shocked ) www.AllPackedUp.com

This may be a silly question, but I am a bit of a mechanical dunce....

The choice for front and rear seems to be ATB diff OR fully lockable. Given that you can get a centre ATB which you can also fully lock, why can't you have front and rear ATB's with full lock capabilities?

I've had ATB on front on an 50th - hated it, removed it. The power on/off run out/tuck in was too much to live with and dangerous in an emergency situation. On a wet roundabout with a diesel spill I nearly crashed it.So the ATB was removed - problem gone.

The rear ATB was on the 50th and I also had it on a V8 Ninety. This was effective and un noticeable.

Its subtle on a low powered diesel, and less noticeable on a 110 - but in an emergency and on low traction surfaces too intrusive and counterproductive when you need them most. JB
