Is ATB differential dangerous?
Hi there, I am new to the forum and to the vehicle, so let me first say hello! I have a MY2011 110 with the 2.4 puma motor. Just thinking about beefing up the drivetrain after I totally lost drive 2 days ago. So I searched and read everything I can find about lsd and atb diffs, there was indeed a very interesting thread here, an old one, but I missed the drawbacks of atb differential when driving on hard packed snow or ice.

Everybody seems to be happy with their atbs, but I will be afraid to drive one in icy conditions as the vehicle can loose the trac and collide with another vehicle. This is not about off road performance, I am convinced that an atb diff will be great there. My truck sees 90% of the time streets, but occasinally, for example when my trail rig, an Jeep YJ with ARB lockers, is again in the garage for the next modification, I hit some tough terrain with the defender and usually end up walking home. But this is fine. What bothers me is the on road performance...in winter on snowy roadz the TC lamp lights as if the car is a christmas tree. Fitting a selectable locker wont help here. But how will an atb affect the in turn stability of the car? I dont want to think about not changing gears in turns, because the car might turn 180 deg. There are many threads about the good off road performance but what about road driving in slippery conditions?

Never had an issue in snow or ice with mine, in fact I have never encountered any conditions in which the ATBs have had the slightest negative effect.

blackwolf, thank you for sharing your experience. Very Happy There was a post in the old thread about car spin with the clutch depressed and a combination left side less traction, right side more traction. I wonder if someone experienced similar behaviour...or made this on purpose just for test.
Cheers,
Delyan

PS interesting that the defender leaves you walking home, is this because its broken or stuck DEFENDER 90 TDCI XS,

It gets stuck...furthermore TC is useless on mud or snow. I drive often forest roads that are easy if dry, but really challenging when wet (clay type mud) or snowy. Then as steering is not always possible when road is nasty I often slede left or right, meaning the car is tilted to the side and only 2 wheels have traction, of course the wheels with no mass on them. Than you see how useless TC can be and I am always surprised about some "special" vocabulary than comes to mind in this situations.
I know atbs will be much help, but i'd rather leave the car in the field than eventually sacrifycing on road manner. Thats why my question is about on road behaviour of atb.

I got stuck with MTs many times and each time because there was no grip left or right. But the main driver for upgrades is the reliability of the car. The idea is simple: each time I break sth. I put aftermarket stuff which is much stronger. Therefore my consideration regarding the front and rear dif- to replace them with stronger diffs and to upgrade the halfsfafts and flanges...but one at a time, this will ruin the family budget Confused

yes, I read it three times really carefully. right now i tend to install an atb diff in the rear and keepp the front open or some day put a selectable locker there.

I have had an ATB in the rear of mine and on road it been totally transparent. No negative affects at all. I fancy one for the front now.

Mine doesn't have traction control - I wish it did, ATB and TC are a marriage made in heaven.

I don't have experience with ATB's, but have experience with ARB's, truetrac's and Detroit lockers.
In a side slope situation een open diff is the safest. Yes your highest tyre on the axle wil have the least grip and will spin but your lowest tyre will have grip and tries to prevent you from sliding down the hill. Any traction device that will try to any torque to the lower tyre will make the lower tyre spin to and you will slide down. Whistle

I know I have experience with that.

My defender is not going to be a trail vehicle and I dont go offroading for the sport...I just have to pass some forest roads for a purpose, and I dont take the defender if my jeep is available. I am not new to offroading, but new to defenders...have mine for two years now. bought it for long trips with the family, kids love it, so do my wife and I. I didnt want to make serious upgrades to it but I have to, because this vehicle is a bad quality. I started with that puma engine as my turbo died at 50k km...EGR flyed away, cat followed it. Then it was the output shaft of the gearbox, then the center diff...as you can see I work my way down to the diffs and they will be replaced soon together with the halh shafts and drive flanges, wich are badly worn too. And if LR part dies, defender has now 75k on theclock,I defenitely wont bye another from LR. So, soon I will be replacing this diffs, just doing my research what other people choose. I already have experience with arb in my jeep, they are strong design but dont want them for the defender because of the trouble I had with air leaks in the past.
