I didn't get any movement by hand or bar so I worked on the principle that the part is cheap and easy to fit so just do it. I'm glad I did.
Pulling away or changing direction I get a bit of a springy twang noise as one of the rear springs settles. When I next service it I'll try rotating the sprint, greasing where it sits or even clamp it down with a jubilee clip. It's not a problem, just a minor imperfection. Anyway, if you seriously off road one, you get all sorts of horrible noises but you have to learn to live with them, it's normal.

Nevillerover;Thanks for this post/thread.
I did'nt even think I had a problem with a worn A frame ball joint.
Though ocasionaly, usualy when Mrs S,was driving I would hear a clunk from the rear of the tub.I just put it down to her not feeding the power in smoothly.
After reading through this thread,I thought I'd change the joint just on the off chance.& it cant do any harm.
The diference is immediatly evidend,no clunk on take up of drive and a lot smoother.Even when Mrs S is driving.
Thanks also to x-isle for the tip to grind down a socket to fit. Thumbs Up
The old one dous'nt appear to have any play in it,but,it's easy to move by hand; The new joint is nearly imposible to move by hand.
Truck has done 65000km,so similar to what others have found.
Bow down Thumbs Up
Marc.

sharkey964 / nevillerover,

before changing the ball joint was it obvious the clonk / poor take up was coming from the rear or did it seem like the clutch area?

glad it's going well for you now.
Thumbs Up

Anybody get a clonk on dipping the clutch,

or even just selecting a gear?

or even just bring the clutch up in neutral?

The clunk was intermitent & I would say it sounded like it was coming from underneath the tub towards the rear,More so if I or Mrs S, Whistle did'nt feed the power in smoothley.
For what a new joint costs it's well worth doing anyway,it certainly would make a positive diference as opposed to a negative one.

That sounds more like the release bearing,or a clutch related problem.Especialy if you hear it when letting the clutch pedal up in neutral.

Thanks Marc. I plan to...once done will let you know....i suspect it needs doing but suspect (especially from your comment above) that the clutch also needs replacing too.

I've just tripped over this thread and it sounds exactly like the issue I am having. My 110 has covered 28k miles and now i'm hearing a clonk just before coming to a complete stop and also just when pulling away. Occasionally it'll make noise when going slowly around a corner or slowly over a pothole. I don't hear it when cruising at 50 - 60.

Is it a simple job to swop out the old unit for the new'High Articulation' version?

Is this the best replacement? http://www.paddockspares.com/fulcrum-brack...ation.html

Thanks guys!

just wondering why;

a - you'd go for a Britpart when everyone seems to slate them and suggest you shouldn't use them,
b - when not just fit the following as the casting is presumably ok?

I decided to go for the Gwyn Lewis version for that reason:

Much more expensive but a quality part.

You can change the ball joint on it's own, but it's a right fecker of a job. Admittedly, James' probably should be to bad to press out. My previous 90's old one wouldn't budge, but it was probably the original ball joint from the early 90's!

Few people on here have had upwards of 40-50 tonn presses on these with no joy, some have used 10-20 and left it under compression for a few hours before it exploded out of the casing. Then some have been able to hit them out with a hammer.

It all depends on how much time you have! I have a 20-tonn press, but if I needed to do the job quick, I'd buy it with a new fulcrum and then in my own time, press the old one out and fit a new joint and probably sell it.

There are a lot of posts on here about clonking when taking up the drive and often the answer is said to be the A frame fulcrum.
My last Landy had it and I lived with it for years then may latest TDCI had it and I thought I just can't stand it any more. Even though I couldn't pry any movement in the joint I bit the bullet and swapped it for a new one pre-mounted on the casting. What a difference! It's not too difficult to swap and now I think why did I wait all the time. Moral is, got a clonk on take off, don't put up with having to nurse it away from junctions, go swap that joint.

Is this the clonk which is noticable when switching gears and the clutch catches the drivetrain? it annoys me very much, i've got a 2011 defender 90 and i would really like to get rid of the clonk. and i also thought it was due to some slack in the drivetrain somewhere...
