Defenders will always clunk it is inconvertible.

From the clutch you have:

Spline from engine to gearbox
Spline from gearbox to transfer box
Propshaft splines Front
Propshaft splines rear
Front prop input flange on Diff
Rear prop input flange on Diff
Front Diff left hand output flange
Front Diff right hand output flange
Rear Diff left hand output flange
Rear Diff right hand output flange
Front left wheel drive flange
Front right wheel drive flange
Rear left wheel drive flange
Rear right wheel drive flange.

If every one of those flanges has just 0.2mm of play, which they all will because they are a sliding fit by design, from the back of the engine they will have taken up 2.8mm of slack and that will cause a "clack" noise.
Obviously the more warn your flanges, the more slack you will have.

David, I'm afraid your Front Diff looks toast. I would look at getting an earlier HD version.
If you don't need a Limited slip or Locker diff I wouldn't bother fitting one as without use they will deteriorate and then not work when you need it.

Be weary though as the Spline numbers do jump around a bit between models so Ashcrofts will be able to help.

Yeah mines currently in the indie, being taken apart monday and he will get back with some options then (HD/genuine/ashcrofts etc etc)

Also going to check the half shafts etc while they're out incase there's too much play there which seems a common issue, but normally age/mileage related not just failure. Cheers, David

suspect it has been getting worse and worse for a while and one day just went and i should've realised its too clunky, but i guess its like the frogs in cold water being brought up to the boil - you don't notice gradual changes!! Cheers, David

Similar thing happened to my front diff. There are pictures in a thread somewhere on here.

I have (at last) finally got my driveline clunk free, and at the moment it is a delight to drive (there, I've jinxed it now)! All it took was a new clutch, lubricating all moving parts of the gear levers, a new transfer box, Ashcroft ATBs in both axles, and Ashcroft HD halfshafts front and rear, Ashcroft HD CV joints, and Ashcroft HD drive flanges all round. It now drives like it should!

2011, 110 2.4, had clunk on gear change. Had rear diff seals redone and replaced drivers side half shaft under extended warranty, now very tight and no clunk.

Can you tell by looking at the diff (without removing it) if it`s a two or four pin type. Or is it a chassis break point type thing.
I`ve got a 2011 my 90 so I assume it`s a four pin type. Excuse the spelling I`am better with spanners and wires.

Yours will be a 2 pin as it's a 90. You can tell via the diff fill hole.

Couple of easy questions please;
Are front and rear diffs the same?
And should there be the same amount of rotational slack in the front and rear props (assuming hand brake is off) ?
