Locked out of Defender!
I had just finished a 12hr night shift this morning and was de-icing the car with the engine running, shut the door to let it warm up and the bloody central locking arms and locks the car with the engine running. Evil or Very Mad Luckily for me the Defender is parked on a secure car park (steelworks) with security. My son (who works with me) got a lift off a work mate and went back home for the spare keys. I did a bit of a google search on this and it appears that Landrover know about the issue (common problem when its icy/frosted over) and warn not to leave the vehicle running with doors shut.
The joys of Landrover ownership!
maybe worth making this post a sticky for future reference?

You are not alone....several forum members have had the same experience with a different range of both 2.2 and 2.4....

Yep. My Td5 did it, and now my 2.4 Tdci does it. Simple solution is, keys in = window open,

Hello dazzx10r

Yep...read about this on here a while ago and decided to put in place a bit of 'security' so as not to get caught out.

The only thing I would add, is that some insurance companies will take issue with a stolen vehicle because it
was left running (obviously with the keys in) to warm up, a not unusual step at this time of year and left unattended even if for only a very short time.

As always assess the risks and act accordingly... I once saw (in Milan) a Fiat 500 stolen when its owner
got out to open a gate to what looked like a School... you just never know where the opportunists are. SKIP

Our farm TD5 has done that a couple of times, thankfully only when in the yard.
It did it to me with the keys on the seat and the engine off.
One advantage of not having central locking Very Happy

Hi, to make you chuckle (it didn't make me chuckle at the time), I had this exact same problem.

Friday night tipping it down with snow in Sheffield, bumper to bumper, car in front dead as a dodo blocking one lane and causing carnage. Kids and family in there, 6 month old suffering as there car stopped 2 hours before I stopped and they were cold and zero chance of any other source of help.

Offered them a tow off the road initially, left engine on as it couldn't go anywhere, hooked him up, closed back door, and heard the sickening sound of the central locking, no tools, spare key about 40 miles and 7 hours away engine on... Tried a screwdriver, no joy, snowing, cold, embarrassed. Tried prizing window, no joy, smashed window. Annoyed. No good reason for it to lock.

Back in, dragged it off to a car park, then gave him and family a lift home which turned into an epic man v Sheffield roads slog.

Sorting through insurance without affecting NCD. The bloke whose family I rescued has paid my excess and given me a bottle of wine to say thanks. Karma. I must have slighted someone in a past life.

Key to be cut tomorrow and secreted somewhere.

Hey ho. Feel free to offer retrospective advice to make me feel better Mad

Thanks Thumbs Up

You did a good deed there. Bow down

I find a bit of humour makes a bad situation just that little bit more bearable. Laughing
At least it won't cost you anything and you now have new friends Very Happy
