Yes was very mindful of that when disconnecting, I have heard many story's of acid explosions and battery's venting nastys
May just be something only I do or maybe not but I always put the spanner in a plastic bag when undoing the nuts to stop the risk of the spanner arcing against the bodywork. I think it is the Battery because there wasn't even the faintest of a glow or spark or click when trying ether lights, ignition or while disconnecting which makes me think there is no circuit through the battery. It has been working fine, as I say always starts up on quarter revolution and has had no electrical issues no indication of any problems while driving this morning. If it was still warm this morning then there must have been still current running overnight. I guess there must be a short somewhere: either internally in the battery itself, or externally - a good candidate is the alternator.
Since the battery was in good condition until yesterday and this is a sudden failure, I would say there is high chance the alternator has a short somewhere thus it keeps the battery discharging even if everything is switched off. Take the alternator to a specialist for a test. Battery was about 2-3 years old but had shown no signs of being tired or any issues.
Today is the first time since October that she hasn't been used at all so she gets plenty of use and hasn't been stood for any length of time. Anyway, I have just unplugged it and left it- I don't know what im doing with battery electrics so I'm leaving it to someone else who does, a mobile recovery mechanic in a yellow Alcoholics Anonymous (I think thats what it means) van is on its way to check it and the wiring to see whats what. Will update with what he finds but for now will put the kettle on and talk to the dog and watch ice road truckers Running Restoration Thread http://www.defender2.net/forum/post323197.html#323197 Self confessed mileage hunter |

SO here we go.
Not the AA turned up in a recovery lorry and said this the one pointing at the only vehicle on the drive. He had a look, first thing he did was take the seat and battery cover off and look at the unplugged battery cables, then look at me as if to say "seriously, you seriously can't start it" Anyway explained what had happened and he said well lets plug it in and see if we can get her going. Plugged all back in and lo an behold sparks everywhere clock starts working and the courtesy light comes on, all be it a very dim amber glow. Tried to crank it and click click click click so no joy there. He plugs in his booster pack and she starts up without hesitation as if it was Friday. He asked about the battery- how old it was etc and then tryed to open the top plugs, couldn't open them so went and got a pair of water pump pliers and tryed to undo them, got 3 off peared in and said looks ok, then tryed to get the other 3 off and declared "f-it I cant get them off they are probebly fine" He gave the alternator a bit of a wiggle and pushed some wires around and said I suspect your alternator voltage regulator has had it. He did some pokeing and prodding while I say yay or nay to the reaction on the dashboard ammeter. I stopped the engine and tryed to restart and again, click click click click so booster pack re-applyed and the says to go off and have a test drive, get up to running temperature then come back leave it a 3 hours then try again. So did so and will see what happens in 3 hours time. Running Restoration Thread http://www.defender2.net/forum/post323197.html#323197 Self confessed mileage hunter |

Bit stuck now.
If I order a new one there is no guarantee it will arrive before xmas, so will have to go and get a new one. If I take it in to Harwoods they will give me a courtesy car which is good but I will have to get genuine parts fitted and you can bet your bottom dollar that it will not be cheap. What do I do! do you have a decent auto electrical place near you?
There must be one somewhere around, that's where I'd be going. If my experiences with my local one are anything to go by they're likely to have all the parts in stock. |

I'd remove it and give it a proper overnight charge on a ctek. Try it again tomorrow. Once charged take it to a local motor factors for a test. If all ok put it back in start her up and check alternator is charging. Stick all your lights on and Rev the engine etc and use a multimeter

Going to have a ring around tomorrow and see if any local companies have one on the shelf, then go and visit them and the battery and the alternator checked over and replace whichever is faulty, hopefully not both! Then come home and fit it because nether are difficult to fit.
To be honest even halfords might be able to help........but I'm not going there. Have got her on a trickle charger at the moment just to see if I can give it a kick up the whatever but much to my joy the lights all came on when I went out to her so she has life. Knowing her it may just have been a tantrum and everything is fine but still I'd rather get it sorted than think oh well its fine and then have her break down when miles from home. So at the risk of putting more issues into the pot..... can anyone help with what I plan to do? I want to fit a split charge system to allow for me to run my Webasto FBH and some other accessory's in the future, along with a Power Cut off switch and an anderson socket. Has anyone done similar? What bits do I need to get? Can anyone help with the install? Do I need to upgrade my alternator to deal with all this, if so should i do it now as my existing one is suspect? I've had a battery go very hot when it died, almost like an internal short circuit inside the battery.
The only way to rule it out a short is by connecting a thin wire between the positive lead and the battery, then connect the negative to the battery and then connect the charger to the battery. If the thin wire gets warm you have a short somewhere, if it stays cold you need a new battery, don't bother trying to fix the battery, not worth it. |

Denka batteries in Maidstone will almost certainly have the battery you require in stock or your nearest euro car parts ( they may even deliver if you ask nicely. 2005 Td5 90 XS

Probably best to create a new thread in the split charge. The wiring diagram and parts list for mine is on this board somewhere if you search. My setup has isolators and Andersons etc. if your even considering this route then buy a suitable battery now otherwise you will be replacing it. By suitable I mean small so you can get 2 under the seat. I've got 2x blue top optimas in mine. |

still sounds like my original and Much90s thoughts to me to cause the battery failure. Cheers
