AHA!!

So, if I disconnect the negative with everything I can turn off turned off, and I get a spark does that say there is something making a circuit so something is wrong?

you still get a spark if there is a load on the battery

the no spark comes from if you connect up neg last and your spanner touches the bodywork then you get no spark

if there is a current load on the battery when the leads are connected which ever way you will get a spark

really you need to get down to maplins and buy a meter

Just waiting for mine to check out the quality and functionality, if it turns out to be good value, and as well built as some of the reviews suggest, I may even consider a slightly more expensive model, in Green of course... Whistle

Like you it was a done deal but because it was blue

Anyway had a quick go and hopefully I have found some meaningful things.

Old battery after being on charge since 11:30 is showing 12.57 with the number dropping off my a tenth of a milivolt every 5 seconds (is that normal?) with the charged disconnected

When I plugged it into the charger again this went to 12.78 and stayed steady.

Outside in the defender new battery with everything off I can turn off (only things drawing are tracker and clock and radio) was measuring 12.64 V

You'd be better connecting the multimeter, set on DC amps between the negative post of the battery and the earth lead. This will indicate what the AMP draw is from the battery. If you've just got the clock and the like running then your looking for 0.5 amp max I'd say, that's around a 6watt consumption about the same as a sidelight. Thumbs Up I started with nothing and still have most of it left!

don't try and hurry it , leave it on a low charge for a long time , trying to hurry it along you will get a voltage but no guts to it

I have never used one of these before so this is what I did.

Unplugged negative lead.
Set dial to 2m on A with straight line above and 3 dots below
Put red lead to battery - and black lead to the loose cable.

always start with highest amp setting just in case

cant get a big enough pic to see dial and advise

middle hole for black lead , red lead 10adc above lap word

10A seems to be the highest setting on your dial?

As Munch says, start there and see what you get, although I would go straight to the Earth connector, rather than try and use the loose lead... Thumbs Up

10a dial setting at about 5 o'clock on meter dial

DONT forget you need to disconnect the battery earth lead , then use the meter leads to complete the circuit again

And you'll probably need to plug the Black lead into the left hand socket... Thumbs Up
