Hey guys,
Just went out to my 110 to go and pick up the girlfriend from her work do and it is dead as a dodo. Worked fine when I parked her at 12:45 this morning, dash clock says stopped at 2:30 which is a bit of a worry. Checked the battery connections and they are tight but the battery itself is quite warm. Do I charge it or unplug it? Where do I go from here as everything was off. Right, put the battery charger on it and not enough to turn on the charge circuit which leads me to believe that its a battery issue as it can't make a circuit. It didn't blow the chargers circuit when connected so I don't think it is a shorting issue. Am I correct in this thinking?
Had a good look around everywhere visible or get at able and nothing looks rubbed or warn or cut. Everything was off, hadn't left the lights on or radio on or anything silly like that. Took a top off the battery and it still has liquid in it but it was still body temperature (the battery not the liquid, I didn't touch the liquid) Nothing smells hot (land rover has usual landy smell) I would have thought having been last touched this morning it would have cooled down by now? Anything I should check or unplug? Don't want to be woken by firemen Running Restoration Thread http://www.defender2.net/forum/post323197.html#323197 Self confessed mileage hunter |

I would disconnect the battery to start with. Don't make old people mad.
We don't like being old in the first place, so it doesn't take much to us off. Richard |

Battery Disconnected
Can't see the alternator wiring without some dismantling so sounds like a tomorrow problem to me. Checked the earth straps and they all look good. Feeling the battery the warmth was more on the positive end rather than the negative end. Nah already got one of those under the bonnet. Any brands or types as an upgrade or just go for replacement of original? Running Restoration Thread http://www.defender2.net/forum/post323197.html#323197 Self confessed mileage hunter |

Wiring shorts dont normally flatten a battery
if its a big short then long before battery goes flat the wire will burn out , sometimes smoke will be visable ( or it catches fire ! ) Its normally some with a coil inside to flatten a battery , like the alternator , if the short is big enough then the alternaor can feel warm ( the short is inside not on the wiring to it ) yes could be simple as a dead battery sometimes a link between the cells can break , but normally the link will weaken first giving possible starting problems , like you switch on some lights on dash will come on then as you go to start the starter current breaks the joint and you lose everything then sometimes after few mins you get dash back once the link gets slight contact again |

It sounds like you have a standard wet lead acid battery with at least one cell shorting out.
If so it might be an idea to check water level, charge it up then with cell tops open get an old fashion battery drop tester and see what happens. Brendan |

You may know this but i dont if you do or not !
Be careful checking any battery that could be giving off gases while charging or testing as the gases are very explosive i seen a few batterys explode and seen the results of a complete electric forklift battery pack that blew to top out of every cell you dont need a flame to ignite , just a spark on a terminal will do it |

Surely it'd be best to remove it by taking off the negative clamp first then take the whole battery out.
To ideally outside will full ventilation, at least then what ever you do do with it, it will at least be not in a confined space. |

General rule is what ever you do either charging or testing is let it breathe a while before doing either
charge breathe test test breathe charge charge breathe connect to car etc If possible charge off the car because if it gases alot the gases are also corrosive, and if its dead flat a low low charge rate IF YOUR NOT SURE HAVE A READ UP ON IT FIRST , OR TAKE IT TO SOMEONE WHO IS SURE WHAT TO DO , MOST GOOD MOTORFACTORS HAVE DROP TESTERS AND CAN TEST FOR YOU Last edited by munch90 on 20th Dec 2014 11:41pm.
