Steering box replacement
Hey all,

I've been advised that I should look at changing my steering box in the near future.

I've had a quick search and the job doesn't seem overly technical so I'm considering doing it myself.

Looking at the web there are 3 types

3 bolt (NRC6051)
4 bolt (NTC1580)
6 bolt (NTC1582)

The 4 bolt seems to be the one quoted for the age of my defender (2005).

Where can I find part numbers, I tried the links on here but most seem to be broken or I can't see the part I'm looking for. The numbers in brackets came from a bearmach catalog so I'm not sure they are correct.

I'm not sure what to get if I do. Recon or new. The garage quoted with recon unit. Pricing seems to erratic with new from £300-£1000 & recon from £120-£300

Adwest seem to be the original manufacture but these days they come under magal now.

I'm considering emailing as west/magal and see what price they can offer for a new one.

Does anybody have a contact email they have used recently for them? Or is it just through enquiries!

Finally, are there any other bits that should be swapped as good practise when doing the job?

Thanks. 2006 Defender Double Cab- Zambezi Silver

Talk to Adwest direct for best advice and prices. What's wrong with yours?

Cheers Andy,

I'll drop them a email today.

From what he was saying and what I've noticed. There is a lot of play in it at the centre position. I've not managed to have a loo at it & see if there are any leaks eto yet.

I've got my sick little one not letting me put him down!!!

To be honest I don't know much about them & what problems occur etc and what checks can be done.

Cheers for the reply. 2006 Defender Double Cab- Zambezi Silver

You can adjust the box. When I wanted to get a new box on my 04 Td5, I spoke to Adwest who told me I didn't need one and told me I needed a new shaft instead. So can't fault them.

As said, it's adjustable. First job should be to check if you can minimize play by just tightening it. New ones are silly expensive. I just had mine rebuilt and its absolutely fine now.

If you do need a replacement, as suggested above talk to Adwest. Adwest also supply reconditioned boxes but they are at least recoditioned to OEM standards, unlike, it would seem, Landrover parts. I would have no qualms about a box reconditioned by Adwest.

I needed a replacement box for my Disco2 some years ago (essentially the same as the Defender box) and had an appalling experience with Genuine Parts boxes. First problem is that they are all "reconditioned" not new, second problem is that they seem to be reconditioned by a blind incompetent with the wrong tools.

The original (Adwest) box lasted something like 140k miles then developed a minor leak.
The first Genuine Parts box didn't even last the 40 mile journey home before developing a worse leak than the original, due to one of the seals being incorrectly fitted.
The second GP box lasted until it was a week or so out of warranty and then developed a catastropic leak due to poor assembly quality.
At that point I bought a second-hand box from a similar but lower mileage vehicle via Ebay, which was one tenth the cost of the GP boxes and has lasted over 60k miles without problems.

Thanks Timo,

I'll have a look at that.

Thanks Blackwolf,

I've read quite a few stories about poor quality boxes and then not lasting. I'll contact adwest & see what prices they offer on recon/new.

Just had a quick look at it, I can rock the input by hand quotes easily just before the box with no output in the arm at the bottom.

I don't know if that's right or wrong though. There are no leaks I can see.

It does look like it would be a real PIA to remove though!! 2006 Defender Double Cab- Zambezi Silver

If you do go for a new one go for ether a 3 or 4 bolt one.

Try and stay away from the 6 bolt one, they are not as strong as the 4 bolt ones. Running Restoration Thread http://www.defender2.net/forum/post323197.html#323197

IIRC the 3 bolt box will have imperial fittings, so may need adaptors to get it to fit your metric system. 110 D250 SE HT
