Gents, I have the option to buy a 2nd hand ATB with 10,000km at half the price of a new one.

Worth it? What could be wrong in there that a visual inspection won't reveal?

Given your location as long as the unit is in good nick then I would jump on that. Thumbs Up

^ And so I did!

Got it fitted, and straight away noticed the following:

- the steering is a lot heavier
- there is a lot more understeer now
- the steering doesn't return to centre as quickly

Oh well, gone are the days of slinging it around the many traffic circles in town then Rolling with laughter --

Never fear Naks it does improve a lot Thumbs Up Give it time and you'll find that the ATB will loosen up a bit and the understeer will reduce and the steering lighten. Or you will grow bigger muscles Rolling Eyes

At full lock, e.g., turning in & out of a parking bay, there's some grabbing - is that normal? Any way to dial it back a touch? --

^ yep, those very same ones. no wonder the tyres were grabbing at full lock.

took it back, and they fitted them on the spot, and adjusted the handbrake as well, it was clanking at low speeds. --

Did a trail this weekend, it was raining quite a bit, so slippery gravel/rocks.

Not sure the front ATB made a big difference, TBH... --

While investigating a clunk in the rear diff when taking off from standstill, this is what we found:

https://www.reddit.com/r/LandRoverDefender...r_6_years/

there was also no play at all on the crown when cold, so it was eating the rear side shafts. --

Unfortunately whatever is in your link requires the installation of an "app" (which I have no intention of doing) and is not viewable without.

It can be fixed I reckon

dunno, I started experiencing a clunk when driving from standstill, so this is what led us here.

This Ashcroft ATB was installed in August 2017, and has done about 24,000km. So I guess the bearings eventually got loose enough to start causing the issue? --
