Hi, just disconnected negative... immobiliser all seems OK.... but won't start. I have just connected the old battery that's almost flat ..with jump leads and now just keeps clicking.... maybe dead battery...

That’s way way too low, you have a dead battery that either needs charging or needs replacing if won’t charge.

Do you have another vehicle you can use to jump start your defender, if it jumpstarts and runs with leads still connected then that proves it’s the battery

I have a big jump back at work - so ill try that when i get home.

Funny thing is when i connected the old battery from our shed, it then started clicking but the Volts only rose slightly- as it was pretty much dead- but it seemed to do more when connected

How Many Volts does it need to evan attempt to start?

Sounds like you have parasitic drain, but could be that the battery needs replacing, or Alternator is toast.
If you charge the battery, then all is well, find out immediately if it’s parasitic drain or alternator failing to produce charging current voltage.
If at rest and you don’t know if there is parasitic drain, or it’s not identified, leave the battery disconnected or you will get a dead battery again.

Has any work been done on it recently?
Check battery voltage across the terminals, as if you haven’t you may have a loose ground, and your gauge will reflect this. _\Hennessey|Venom| F5/___
