Whooshing sound under load, couldnt find cracked hose
Hello,

I´d like to ask for some community knowledge here - I started to get following symptoms on my Defender 2.4 TDci (270k KM).

Erratic idle, esp. when cold, slowly getting worse to the point it sometimes would stall when driving off.
My mechanic (experienced with LRD) checked diagnostics and got error code about MAF sensor.
So we ordered new MAF and VCV as well (as this could cause erratic idle as Ive read on this forum).

Few days later, while waiting for the parts, a strange whooshing sound develops, comes from the front drivers side of the engine bay (left). Only happens when under heavier load, not present when revving in neutral or just coasting. Also slowly gets worse. On my way to the service I used the highway and was driving ca. 120kmh and started to get a lot of brownish smoke. After some time limp mode activated and couldnt accelerate past 80 kmh. Still no check engine light.

In the service we changed MAF and checked the boost hoses for obvious cracks, also when revving in idle, visually inspected intercooler, intake manifold, air filter, found nothing. Also checked turbo, disconnected hoses to turbo, found no oil, completely clean. We found error code, something with underboost? We didnt really have time to change hoses or VCV yet (will do next week). After starting the car and doing a test drive it drove normal, the idle was better but not 100%, still some hiccups here and there. Would accelerate completely normal (no power loss) but the whooshing sound unchanged, still very evident.

Recent service done to the car that may be relevant:
3mos ago - new exhaust with decat (note: the whooshing sound I am describing is different to the turbo sound one hears when doing a decat)
2 years ago - new seals for injectors and cam cover (the upper part I mean)
4 years ago new EGR - but when it went there was too a bit of black smoke under load, lazier, but a check engine light.

Any ideas?

Sounds just like intercooler hose, or the intercooler having a split.

Try cleaning the MAP sensor and check tube vanes and pivots lube, is the air filter clean or is there a lot of debris in there?
Any signs of oil deposits around any hoses such as mentioned above, the manifold or other areas? ____\We|Will|Win/___

Drop the viscous fan off and try it to see if the noise is still there, does make a loud noise when engaged.

As per Andy Landy check for a leak in the in the induction system between the turbo and the inlet manifold as this will make a similar noise to what you have described. If this is the issue but it hasn’t triggered the engine check light or gone into limp mode it is likely the hole is quite small, which can make it difficult to locate.
Check out the lower part of page 1 of this topic https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic82014.html to help look for leaks.
