200 TDi not starting
Last week my parents went out to view a car for my sister,
They never even got down the road, when the motor starting losing power and cutting out. They bailed back home, but ended up breaking down, so i had to tow them back home.
Me and my dad have changed the following items as we suspect its fuel related issue.
The fuel pump Solenoid and the lift pump, when we removed the old lift pump and pipes we found that the system was dry, as though the car had ran out of diesel, which the tank is half full.
Can we hell get the any fuel through the lift pump at all, no matter which way we rotate the engine, it isn't picking up any fuel at all, We have even tried to crank the car to the point its just flatting the battery like. I am suspecting that the fuel line has failed as we later discovered a cut off solenoid in the main line, which we have removed and its still the same. We have cracked off the top bleed screw on the filter housing, so that air can escape.
Me and my dad have spent a few hours trying to prime the system,

The nightmare of nightmares, is that they are going away with the caravan a week today!

is there anything you lads can suggest we can do Just to get the system to pick up diesel and get it to run again? Defender TD5 90 ---/--- Peugeot 306 HDI hatch back

No point in constantly cranking it. Just use the lift pump manual lever. You can feel if there is tension or not.

Also, take the inlet off the lift pump and put your thumb over the end whilst you pump them manual lever. You will be able to hear a tiny pop when you pull your thumb off IF the pump is good and off the cam.

Once that's confirmed, nasty as it is, at this stage I'd suck on the pipe that comes up from the tank. I'm not telling you to do this or anyone else to do it etc.etc but it would tell you if the pipe was working.

If it isn't, that's your issue. I would use clear nylon pnumatics pipe (you can get it off eBay in all different diameters) with compression fittings and brass inserts to stop the pipe collapsing (although you can get away with not doing so if you really have to).

Been years since I worked on Tdi.

Is fuel cut off solenoid working / got power to it. That would be where I start. If that was definitely working then fuel line off before pump /solenoid and as above try sucking diesel through, or using a compressor and a rag, put some air pressure into tank and get fuel out of main line. How old does filter look?

My initial looking would definitely be cut off solenoid.

Also something to think about, is that the gauge SHOWS you an amount of fuel, but is it correct ?

Other thoughts:

Replace fuel filter?

With a firm lift pump lever you should be able to get fuel coming out of the filter bleed screw in a minute or so.

Also stick 5L of diesel in just to be sure.
