This is from the recall and service bulletin thread, I didn’t find any information other than the headline:
SSM44470 - Defender transmission oil filler plug Could it be any correlation? |

If this had been a big issue, the Mustang forums would be full of it. It's just a plug (with gasket)!

ls there any update on this, was it just a new filler plug and oil change, or was there a fault with the gearbox in the end?

UPDATE (Eventually)
17 weeks ago on Friday 13 June whilst driving on the motorway I heard the filler plug being blown from the main gearbox, (very unusual) Recovered to a garage and a new plug was installed (not by myself). I was having brakes, bearings, CV joint and halfshafts replaced on front axle. £1400. When I returned from holiday I drove it back down the motorway home, when immediately as I pulled up in 3rd I got stuck in gear. 3rd gear which is unusual as it’s usually 1st many people get stuck in and it’s the detents which are easily accessible from inside the cabin. So it was recovered to the very good “Engine 710” in Edinburgh. The bad news came that the boxes had to be removed and the main box was toast. Turns out that it wasn’t the filler plug that was spat out (drivers side) but the plug on the (passenger side) which is not the filler plug. Someone has filled the box from this plug on the wrong side which has a spring on it and connected to the box selectors and it wasn’t tightened properly, hence losing it on the motorway. A new Ashcroft box was ordered and some weeks later it was put back together. I was also told that whoever installed the lubricated Ashcroft lay shaft had made a hash of it so a new one was installed from LOF at the same time. £3000 and I had the boxes out only weeks before putting an LOF clutch in. The bad news continued when I was told by ‘Engine 710’ that my glow plugs were not working and needed immediate replacement so it stayed for another few weeks and of course one was stuck solid and broke. Well….. the good news is today I got it back 17 weeks later after a ton of pain and money. All in I’m £5K spent and happy to have my truck back. Iv been offered a 69 2A LWT which I’d need to sell my 110 for and very tempted. Thanks for the interest in what happened but the moral of the story is, only have good engineers do your work and the gearbox filler plug is on the drivers side. Thanks to Engine 710 and Dave Ashcroft and LOF for all the parts and customer support. Keith. ![]() Click image to enlarge |

Glad to hear you've been reunited.
Sorry to hear you found out what happens when not the fill plug is used. Craig. “Don't believe everything you read on the internet.” ― Abraham Lincoln www.scotgrc.co.uk Last edited by Cragster69 on 11th Oct 2025 7:12pm. Edited 1 time in total |

Glad things are sorted!
"and the gearbox filler plug is on the drivers side" Yes, if it is RHD. Otherwise... |
