Are you aware that replacing the crank oil seal involves removing the timing belt? Time for new belt and idler/tension pulleys plus setting up the timing.

There's an O ring in there as well which is more for sealing the oil. The seal stops crap going into the sump, the O ring helps stop the oil coming out.
Seating the seal can be a bit of a ![]() 82 Hotspur Sandringham 6x6 95 Defender 110 300Tdi |

Hello,
thanks for all the suggestions on this job. The genuine manual is quite sparse in some areas particularly regarding fitting oil seals. The primary reason for replacing the timing bell is because of a leak between inner oil seal and crank timing belt pulley. There was no obvious reason for this having just removed the old pulley and seal. The oil seal had the void facing the inside of the engine and the front face was flush with the front of the timing cover inner face. I suspected the O ring but that was in position between crank nose and old pulley, undamaged and with traces of vaseline remaining. Is this correct? Tricky to tell from the myriad videos on YouTube. Reason I ask is that there is a flange to prevent the seal being inserted too far. The pulley and seal relative position looks good but I don't want the "joy" of having to repeat this job in the near future. Thanks once again! |
