Looking at prior posts Big Red has a Puma 110.

So no you do not need to reprogram the key if changing the ignition barrel.

I completed the work this week, it turned out there was some programming (ish) to accept the key using the key fob.

The ignition switch/barrel is definitely not an item which requires programming, so you've had to have that done for some other reason.  1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

I bet that other reason was the fob needed a resync, ie. with doors shut press fob lock button four times in quick succession then unlock button once.
Which would have been nothing to do with the barrel being replaced.
