Discovery 4 vs New Defender
The Defender is a lovely car, but I'm still not convinced and really miss the practicality of my D4.

Am I alone or is anyone else in the same boat?

its the only thing LR offer now thats anywhere close

apart from the inconvenience of the side opening door and a boot depth less than a D3/D4 its better in every other way - except price Steve N | 21MY Defender | 08MY Discovery 3 (history) | 06MY Discovery 3 (ancient history)

I agree, but I really miss the D4 boot, tail gate and its functionality and I know its old. Frustratingly, the D5 never did it for me

Its all because I bought my youngest daughter a D3 on Friday ready for her year off trip when she finishes her A Levels in June. It's made me re connect with how good the D3/4 was from a practicality point of view, such I've started to look at D4's again Rolling Eyes

My friend was selling his beautiful 36,000 mile Discovery 4 when he bought his Defender.

l was tempted because it was half the price (of the Defender l had on order)
However the engine failure issue was an issue for me. "Like driving a grenade with the pin pulled" said my local LR specialist.

Engine failure can cost over £10,000 to put right and there's no warning, it starts knocking and by then it's too late.
There seems to be no preventative measures that you can take, and it can happen at any mileage.

I think I might be buying an LR4 (D4) again, but this time in France. I have had several LR3/4 whilst living in the USA and UAE, but they were all V8s, all with their own 'engine issues', which never caused me any issue. Lovely drive and so practical (love the split gate)

I am not familiar with the European offer. I assume they are all diesels. Which of the engines is considered to the the hand grenade and are there years to avoid?

I might even be interested in an LR3, which I prefer slightly aesthetically, but found with some of the critical cables routed under the floor mats to be more vulnerable electrically (after the sun roof starts leaking dt the blocked drains etc).

Are the LR3 diesel engines delicate also?

"Discovery 4 engine failure" lt seems there's a design fault with the crankshaft and it affects the 3.0 but also the 2.7

Post 2012 engines were supposed to be better but people have still had failures.

I wouldn’t go back, the Defender was never intended to fill the D3/4s shoes. D5 has more load space and proper seats in the boot. There is also the 130 option now but it’s a monster of a thing.

I’m thinking of going the other, getting rid of the 110 and going back to a 90, 90s practicality is the pits but I prefer it. 24MY 90 D250 HSE, Tasman Blue

My D3 was one of the best cars I have owned, so practical and you could sleep in the back easily. Unfortunately the electrics were just starting to play up at 10 years old so with some regret I traded it for a 110.

I’m also a D3 fan, bought when my son was 4 and had it almost 8 years.
I sold that for a Discovery Sport in 2015 when they first came out so you can imagine the regret I had after getting out of the magic carpet and then driving the Disco sport !

Had a year or 2 driving a VW California Beach about which had good space but I swear that’s the reason I need a hip replacement !

Drive a Disco 5 about for 3 years and couldn’t wait to give it them back, hated that thing I started hankering after a D4 a month or 2 ago quickly realised that I’d need £30k for a good one and that the engine failure was a ticking time bomb.

So, here I am Defenderless for now ! DEFENDER XS CSW 08 TONGA GREEN

It is a conundrum.

I went to buy a late 2016 HSE Lux and ended up ordering a Defender Confused

Now I'm torn, even more so having just bought my daughter a very nice 2008 D3.

I've seen a few late 2016 D4s for £30k ish. I'm aware of the engine issues but if it's something I like and would keep, then £10k for a new engine, when related to the cost of a Defender, I think is an OK cost.

My wife isn't convinced by the Defender - its too expensive for what it is and she might be right. Is it really worth £75k?

So, I'm back in a quandary! Rolling Eyes Laughing

A new D4 engine can cost more than £10,000

Read the thread l put the link to above. What's the specification of your £75,000 Defender, could you not choose a cheaper model or is that the lead in price.

It's a D250 with a few bits and bobs but it's that sense of value for money. I'm just not convinced by it.

Granted, D4 is old technology, which is what put me off, but add in Apple CarPlay and its got pretty much what I want. I've run 2 D3 and a D4 so I know what they are like. It's my daughter's D3 that has thrown me. Just opening the boot and sitting on the rear tailgate made me realise how much functionality and practicality I've lost.

Anyway, something t think about.

£75,000 is a big spend if you're not 100% certain.

Have you considered a Grenadier?

I've owned my Defender 9 weeks now. In that time it's been to Milan twice and had some phone across Salisbury Plain, so I've got used to it.

I did look at the Grenadier but I had some info from someone involved in the project about on road long distance driving that made me think otherwise.

I kept my XC90 for 6 weeks after I got it because I wasn't sure and now driving a 14 year old D3 I'm even more confused!

Real world problem and all that. Laughing
