It's to allow suppliers to bill different rates for different specific times of day and potentially be able to do this dynamically. This is how suppliers will be billed by the distributors going forward.

If there is very little demand between say midnight and 3am, it makes sense to run some items at this time. Being able to measure how much a customer uses in those specific half hours allows them to benefit from the cheaper electricity.

On a current single rate meter, customer.might be paying 35p/kwh for all usage whereas the actual cost might only be 3p st certain times of day. Without half hourly reads there is no way to.benefit from this.

Customers don't have to elect to be billed like this (yet) but it is one way of smoothing demand out across the day and reducing the extra generation and distribution capacity required to satisfy the increasing load on the network.

Without putting the tinfoil hat on too much it stands to reason that they expect the majority of say EV users to charge overnight, for now a reduced rate when theres too much generation but when say EV adoption has risen and theres more demand overnight for charging that there is excess supply. Like all games we have the deck stacked against us.

Exactly! If anyone thought smart meters were for the Customers convenience, think again.

We have a horrible energy black hole and just like rush hour, there are times of the day when demand is worryingly close to output (namely 4.00 to 6.30pm when we are nearly all cooking our tea and turning the heating up). If as a country we can spread this demand latter (earlier is a bit difficult!) it may make a big difference to the distribution network. The only way of doing this is to charge customers more at peak demand times.

If you think this is new, think again. Big businesses and energy users have been charged more for ‘Triad periods’ for years. Where possible, these industries will stop processes or run on generators (yup, you heard that right) to supplement or take demand off the grid. I don’t know the commercial details of such schemes but the customer is fined (by way of a higher energy rate) or units used during a Triad period.

I expect this will come to all of us at some time or another.

There was a time that I would have said that the meter would be highly unlikely to be at fault, but £930 is excessive and unless she has a kiln on the go or has the heating at 40C or a commercial oven, that sounds the only logical explanation. The only other possibility is a gas leak past the meter but in an area where it is venting to atmosphere, but again highly unlikely.

I would imagine new meters are manufactured at incredibly low prices to entertain the suppliers accountants and procurement department. Quality control may be very low.

I have heard the opposite where a friend had a dual energy account where they were paying for the electricity, but the Gas supply was uninvoiced and who ever they talked to, no one would help. They were worried about ending up with an enormous bill! That was eon I believe?

I wish you all the luck in the world Thumbs Up

Even my mothers uninsulated single glazed 200 year-old farm house in Scotland with all electric heating and an AGA isn't that high.

Well...The good news just in... my mum is now £147 in credit! It took two managers and a call advisor to work out there was an issue with the billing.
Not sure what swung it, but hopefully now the issue is done and dusted.
Cheers to all that offered help / assistance 1999 Defender TD5 110
