It's earthing through the handbrake cable. Try connecting a SINGLE jump lead between the battery negative terminal and something bare metal on the engine, to create a good earth return path.  1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

Martin's idea sound a good fix! If indeed the whole electrical system is earthing out through the cable. If not it could be another system and with all the parallel paths it could be a system dragging the rest down possibly....

Remove all the irrelevant fuses, lights, wipers etc. etc. and try again, you need to isolate whatever system appears to be shorting to earth through the handbrake cable. You can then restablish the system fuses one by one to try and source the problem. Good luck! If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!!

well after removing the earth from the chassis and giving it a good clean and bit of copper slip before replacing the nut it had no affect still wouldnt start
so i then removed the earth to the transferbox giving the tab a good rub down with a wire brush and the bolt a good spray with copper slip and replaced it
She fired back into life first turn of the key

the big down side to all of this is that it has earthed the handbrake cable so badly that i have now got no working handbrake and have had to order a new cable Rolling Eyes 6o quid later for a genuine one

So i thought its worth mentioning before you get in this situation it could be worth getting undr your trucks and jsut giving those earth straps a check and clean before you get and reasonably exspensive problem like me
exspecially if you have to get a dealer to sort the problem out

thanks for everyones help on this matter

kind regards steve 2015 2.2 tdci hardtop xs
