decision time.
after much research and thanks for all your help and after reading this thread http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic7788.html?highlight=blanket I decided to order the NK blanket as a start. I'll try that for a while and if necessary fit the fron NK kit and add 10mm in the rear from Acoustafoam as mentioned in AndrewS's post. the rationale being that the fron NK kit is already cut to all the correct shapes and the rear in comparision is easy 'flat bits'. regards BM52 |

coverd about 200 miles with the NK blanket on now and it has made quite a big difference, interestingly it seems to have moved the source of noise down towards the floor at speeds below 60 and at motorway speeds it seems very obvious that i now need to do the floor and seat box, plus the rear to reduce overall boom and road noise - can't hardly hear the engine now unless revved.
NK kit is on my Xmas pressy list now! BM52 |

what readings did you get from your decibel app? Most modern cars are around the 70 db mark and although the Defender is never ever going to be anywhere near that it would be interesting to know |

before at 50 around 75-76db at 70 it was approx 79-80db
after the NK blanket at 50 around 73-74db at 70 about 78db. quality of road surface made a difference and in Kent the roads are cr@p. it will be interesting to see how much it goes down after the full NK kit. BM52 |

I just bought some 10mm thick soundproofing material off ebay.
Compared to the NoiseKiller stuff, this is really poor quality...more like a cheap foam sleeping mattress for camping, but twice the cost. Already have NK in the rear tub, and also under bonnet, was buying a bit extra (for under the front mats, and under the front seats), and decided to try an alternative to NK (being a tight Yorkshireman living in Scotland, I wanted to try and save a few quid ). Looks like I'll be back to NK, although it's pricey, it's good stuff. The NK in the rear tub made a big difference. One of my major noise sources was the rear wheelarches - especially on wet roads, or gravel tracks. The NK really fixed this! Defender "Puma" 2.4 110 County Utility (possibly the last of the 2.4's) |
