Under-dash (aircon) fan lost speed I and II, III still ok
Hi, last week or so, I lost speed I and II on my under-dash fan (a.k.a. aircon). Note that speed III (hurricane setting, at least in terms of noise...) still works, and the cooling part of the A/C also seems to be working fine. Since this is not a total loss of the fan function, I suspect it's not a blown fuse but the switch itself? Is this a known issue with typically an easy fix?

In case of any confusion, I am referring to the rotary switch that controls the fan speed, not the A/C, as in the image below:

Sounds highly likely that the resistors have gone on the blower motor. Only on speed 3 does the full current flow from the motor to the switch, in positions 1 and 2 current flows via resistors and hence the lower speeds. I'm not sure for certain but I think the resistors are nestled nice and tight on the motor in the passenger footwell, really hard to get to. The part number you need is JGM100130, item 5 in the pic below

Good luck!

thanks a lot for th einfo, but Censored if it's indeed hard to get to Big Cry. Do you think this can be fixed in-situ or will I need to bleed/empty the A/C and remove the entire unit to get access? Defender 130 HCPU Td5 MY2000

I just had a good rummage in the footwell of mine...impossible to get to, the unit will have to come out I'm afraid.

Of course it has to Big Cry

Nothing is ever easy, is it?

Thanks for the info though, much appreciated and I learned something new today about how heater fans work Thumbs Up Defender 130 HCPU Td5 MY2000

Me too! I thought LR would do it the easy way and fit the resistors in the switch which is easy to get to, but oh no...they thought better!

The resistors get hot so are placed near the fan for a bit of cooling.

You'd have thought there was enough cooled, ducted air in that system that the resistors could be placed somewhere more convenient. Just below my left knee would be a perfect spot, consistently at or around 10 degrees C! Rolling with laughter

I'm not sure the designers did "convenience"! In fact I'm not sure "thought" was.involved in the design process. Rolling with laughter
