Front crank pulley rattle :-(
Looks like my front crank pulley has decided that 20 odd years of spinning or 238k miles that its time to give up and rattle at idle.
Lying under the car, i can rotate the pulley and get a clunk. There was a squeak when turning off the engine which might have been a warning.... Sad 1999 Defender TD5 110

Hi John.

238k miles is excellent on a pulley, well done Thumbs Up The repair job is a DIY'able one. No need to drain the rad. The only thing you will probably need is a big enough torque wrench and 3/4" socket to fit. I hired one for the weekend.

If you are in there then it is the perfect time to check over the pulleys, bearings and belt. Especially the fan pulley bearing in the front engine cover.

Cheers. Its done well. It started with a squeak .... Smile
I don't have 3/4 drives or a big enough torque wrench.
I have made a few calls and its off to be looked at by a local garage as I could do with it for the weekend (two motorsport events, Anglesey and Weeton army barracks) and need it fixed. Bad timing! 1999 Defender TD5 110

Start to finish it shouldn't take more than a couple of hours for a garage. Make sure they use a new bolt with the new pulley. The rest of the "whilst you are in there" can wait for another day Thumbs Up

In my head new bolt is a must as is a new pulley. Also a new oil seal as I think this might account for some oil low down on the engine. (along with the rest of the leaks) 1999 Defender TD5 110

Yup that seal does leak a little. Make sure it is a good quality item LR or Corteco or similar.

Just one more thing. The leak may not be coming from that seal but from the vacuum return from the alternator/vacuum pump to engine block. These get hard and leak/weep. it will be right there next to the crank.

Page 20 of the Miffy thread you can see the offending article. You cannot buy this part, but it is essentially just standard pipe, specs in the post;

True. I have had the belt of a few times so I am not bothered about that job, gives me time to clean up the area. 1999 Defender TD5 110
