If I were to go full bore and change all the gearbox, transfer box and both diff oils, would motul gear 300 75w 90 be suitable for all?

The gearbox takes MVMTF 75W-90 to GL-4 spec. Do not put GL-5 spec in the main gearbox. It will react with some of the materials and ruin the gearbox.
75W-90 GL-5 is fine for the rest. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

Many thanks. That motul states GL4 and GL5. Is that not suitable for a GL4 spec too then? I suppose I’m trying to just buy 1 oil that is decent and will do for the lot to just have one type spare for topups

Motul GL4 for the main gear box. 2.2 litres and NO more. Do not use the filler hole as a guide level. If you do it can over heat the gearbox. You can fill the diffs and tranfer box to the filler hole.
Front differential 1.7 litres...GL5
Rear differential 1.7 litres...GL5
Transfer box 2.3 litres...GL5
I used Comma oils
This is from the Comma Oils site
Usually when vehicle manufacturers recommend a GL-4 gear oil, this is what should be used. We would not suggest the use of a GL-5 version in these cases. It may cause difficulty in changing gear or in some extreme cases can lead to not being able to change gear at all. Some OEMs will allow for both specifications to be used, however, generally GL-4 products are used in gearboxes and GL-5 in differentials. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

Just noticed comma do both GL4 and GL 5 oils. Both very cheap semi synth. Might go that way as I’m likely to change these oils far more often than recommended. I suppose more frequent changes with a slightly lesser quality is better than long periods of a better quality oil.

All done.

Engine oil and oil filter
Air filter
Fuel filter
Gearbox oil
Transfer box oil
Front and rear diff oil

Took about half hour for each oil change. No real issues and fairly easy to do. Must say it seems exactly as before but that’s a good sign it was well looked after.

Read somewhere someone saying they greased their propshafts….. where do you do this and with what grease?

Sense of accomplishment with clean fluids now reached.

Any multipurpose Lithium grease should do. You will need a grease gun, one wheel jacked up slighly so you can rotate the propshaft by hand to get at the grease nipple. Do this for the front and back props. Good luck. I gave up doing it as it's a messy business especially if the grease gun sticks "on" ! I just get a local garage to do it up on the lift!

The recommendation is to use an NGL2 specification grease for the prop UJ’s. I use a slightly different grease, Morris K48, as per Gwyn Lewis recommendations https://gwynlewis4x4.co.uk/product/morris-...artridges/

Regarding the grease gun, I use an Alemite 500-E https://gwynlewis4x4.co.uk/product/gl1241-...flex-hose/

Also check the level in your swivels, and top up with one shot grease if low.

Oh.. and get some ACF50 and spray on bonnet hinges and where they attach to to bulkhead and all other hinges.

Edit, my dyslexia strikes again, should have read NLGI 2

Greasey nipples. Lovely. I’ll also get some acf50. Might as well go the full works. Was initially dreading the service works - Kind of into this now. Looking for stuff to do to the Landy!!

Ordered some grease and a piston grease gun.

How many nipples are on the front and rear props and where are they? Watched a YouTube vid but they seem to have an upgraded prop shaft. Got the just though. Pump it in till it squirts out. Oh er misses.

Should have a grease nipple on each UJ, so two-per prop. Then potentially an additional grease nipple on the slider section of the prop. However on later models , and I expect it will be the case for yours if standard, they did not have a slider grease nipple but said it was greased for life.

Search on here for greasing props, or greasing UJ. Lots of info available. One thing to note, undoing one end of the prop so it can be dropped will enable you to articulate each UJ while greasing to ensure the grease has the best chance of getting into all elements of the UJ. It’s not as daunting as it first seems, and there is a great tool to help do this. Search net for defender propshaft tool, from £10 - £20.
