Hello All

90 Load Space Project
A factor in purchasing our 90 was the reconfiguration of the Rear Load Space, from 2 to 4 Seats together with the swap to side facing as opposed to forward facing Seats. The Rear Seats get only occasional use but the Load Space is constantly being rearranged depending on what's required, we also travel with a Roof Box (the Tardis) to try and ensure we have enough space.

Having adopted the 'pile-it' system for too long I thought it was time to improve things...

Starting Position
6 Seater... Seats Down

Very nice. Whilst I've taken a different route for its construction, a 'wheelbox' platform is the most consistently useful thing that I've added to my 110. Darren

110 Load Space
We have a blank canvas here currently...

We are considering adding 2 more Seats to make this 110 a 7 Seater, the rear moulding details are present, although uncut, for 2 Forward Facing Seats Belt 'Anchor' Points. The Side Mouldings also look 'sculptured' to accept additional Seats / either 2 Forward or Side Facing.

I still mindful of the amount of space Forward Facing Seats take up particularly when 'folded away', to my mind they don't really get out of the way enough. I fully accept they are a safer and more comfortable option, but we now have only occasional use of extra Seats, and almost always for short journeys.

Carrying Stuff not People is of more interest, I had to get my tape measure out to confirm that for both the 90 and 110 there is the same 1.1M of available Space from the 'Rear' Seats to the Rear Door, with the obvious additional Space in the 110 when the 3 (middle) Seats are rolled forward giving us an extra 0.5M in load length.

I am resolved to move 110 Load Space Project up the to-do list as we are currently back to the 'pile-it' system... Shocked SKIP

Lovely pair of cars mate and that's some relationship goals Cool - Just wished my mrs enjoy driving the defender as much as I did (previously) can't win them all.

I guess only you can say if you need the extra seats but the forward folders are very bulky. Would one rather than two suffice as a compromise?

I constructed a platform that gave a full width flat floor in mine and I wouldn't be without it now. On the very odd occasions that I need a different shaped load space, it can be removed in a couple of minutes:

Excellent Work Thumbs Up...
I have read your entire My Defender postings, which are a credit to you.

I really like the idea of finding a way to get to the Maximum available Flat Surface Space. Possibly with our 110 we could have a Two Stage Platform adding an additional 'Section' when the 3 Middle Seats are rolled forward, with under Platform Access via the Rear and 2 Rear Side Doors.

Removing 'Stuff' from direct sight (especially in ours as fully glazed) is another Plus.

My Goal with this 110 is to keep it looking as Stock as possible, but adapt it, ideally with the ability to remove 'leaving no trace', so we can use it as we want to, correct / improve the LR short comings, make it Secure, and make it Last.

All adds to the 'make it yours' ethos of Owning a Defender... Very Happy SKIP

My Wife learnt to drive in our 300tdi and would have taken her test in it, (but was advised against),
overall she probably put 30 of its 100K miles on it when sold.

Our Daughters might yet follow too...but Elec-trickery Cars and Uber's may win that race...

and with the Price agreed the deal was done...

110 Towing Set Up

The 110 came with a Dixon Bate 200mm Adjustable Coupling and a Single Pin Slider
she also has 13Pin Towing Electrics via an OEM Land Rover Wiring Loom.

Our issue which is not uncommon I believe is to find a set up that presents a Standard 50mm dia
Tow Ball at the (correct of us) height above ground... around 350mm.

Typically Caravans / Trailers etc being Towed by 'conventional vehicles' anticipate around this 350mm height... not always straight forward with 'higher stature' 4X4's

Set Up Principle...

The 90 has a Fixed in Place Dixon Bate Slider, on a 150mm Adjustable Coupling, the Tow Ball is lowered to the required height with a 'sandwich arrangement' of Drop Plates, getting the Tow Ball down to 345mm. This also gives space for the NATO Hitch, which can sit above on the Adjustable Coupling. All this is off the back of a NAS Rear Step. The 110 is going to have its Set Up directly off the Rear Cross Member.

You know by doing that each Bolt, Washer and Torque Setting is then correct (obvious but this is a critical component)

Dixon Bate + Drop Plate Set Up...

Dixon Bate Couplings and Sliders are made form 10mm Plate, I sourced 10mm thick Drop Plates that allow a 'sandwich' approach, resulting in a 30mm thick Drop Plate 'lower section'

I've elected to Fix the Sliders on both the 90 and 110 by bolting right through the Adjustable Coupling distance. This prevents any knocking or rattling when Towing and adds Security to the Slider in place.

Tow Ball at 345-350mm together with a 'more or less' correctly loaded Caravan (with a Nose Weight bias) results in a slightly Nose Down Towing Set Up. The 110 can also carry an attachable NATO Hitch when required that sits above the Tow Ball (just like the 90) for when we Tow our X-MOD Rapier Trailer. SKIP

Thanks...This 110 is so far proving herself, we will no doubt be tested at times with probably the usual issues as they come along, but I've accepted over the years, that this is the best mind set to adopt, and all part of the Land Rover Customer Experience... Shocked

The 110 Towing set up was a 'just in time' first Modification before its first 'proper' road trip... Cool

2 Weeks, 1700 Miles, near enough perfect weather, Fuji never gave us any doubts, and whilst we have a system of travelling with the 90, and are 'only' 2 Adults + a Dog, the 110 was just easier to live with, Towing felt more or less the same as the 90 in many ways, but the 110 wants to go in a straight line more 'naturally' than the 90. The Caravan we have is an Eriba 540GT, 5M long and essentially the same width and height as a Defender (with it's Pop-Top Roof down) even on the twisty-turny bits (we like to get into) where the 90 would have been better, we never felt this was pushing it in the 110. SKIP

Hello All

Second time now driving part of the NC500, last was in 2018, where we booked only the first and last nights 'camping' with every location and site in-between sorted out on-route...now here we are (semi) post Covid and we got a sense things would be different, so booked all locations, and also managed to help ourselves by going out side of the Scottish school holidays.

Our preferred locations are small sites, <30 pitches ideally, but location, space and quality of services are key, whilst we are if required self contained, a power hook-up helps with our current set up. We managed to get all locations coastal and effectively just reversed up to a Beach or coastal linked Loch.

The NC500 routes were as good as ever especially the West Coast, our Northern European friends were certainly in evidence, and Camper-Vans especially the VW Transporters were 'everywhere', on one site there were 5 Caravans and 22 Camper Vans of which 20 were VW's...

General Photos to follow of what we renamed our 'Covid Tour' as 3 friends we had planned to see tested + so we reverted to Plan B on more than one occasion. Fantastic weather really helps Scotland be seen at its best, and if you venture even slightly off the (especially now) more popular routes it really is exceptional, if you like to go where most don't, then there remains plenty of scope for a real get-away.

Spotted many New Defenders in Scotland (some even waved...) I've posted a few 'obligatory' shots of our chosen means of transport...
