United Kingdom 2012 Defender 110 Puma 2.2 XS CSW Orkney Grey
IRB Developments - Defender High Performance Air Box
I thought this looked very interesting. I'm sold on the idea the air intake is restrictive but never been entirely happy about carrying out the air box mod where you cut out the water catcher thingy. This may be the answer. No ideas on cost yet.

From IRB Facebook page....

"At long last - New Product Time:

Defender Puma High Performance Air Box

On the back of the air box design for the IRB Coyote V8 Conversion, we decided to take a modular approach and make a lid to suit 2.2 and 2.4 Tdci Defender (we can also do lids for LS3 and other engine options).

The standard Puma Air Intake/Air Path is massively restrictive and at times is down to an orifice that is less than 23mm wide by 90mm high - as well as being a far from perfect flow path (and not sealed).

With the new set up, the air box is fed via a 102mm pipe (made in an OEM style) from a correctly profiled air intake into a custom ITG filter.

The intake and the air box both feature water traps/drains and fit into existing mounts/holes (RHD only).

With the air box tucked under the wing, access to the intercooler hoses, steering box and air filter is hugely improved.

Road and Rolling Road testing coming soon - including back to back results.

Thanks to @blackbirdindustriesuk for their excellent 3D scanning, CAD and fabrication skills, turning my ideas into a repeatable reality!

It's an interesting idea but I wouldn't like to have to rely on a custom air filter. Service items like that really should be off-the-shelf parts, IMHO. I believe that the Nugget Stuff offering uses a commercial air filter. Darren

I spoke to IRB months ago, and at that time he said he was working on something like this for the 300Tdi.

I’ve kept checking the website, but nothing so far. This looks like a positive development and offers some hope that a Tdi version might be in the wings (pardon the pun!) Donald

Yes it's an old Nissan light truck/car filter. You can get them from any filter supplier by part number cross reference. The only slight question mark I have is that the engines it is intended for are less powerful than the Puma so I worry slightly about weather it flows enough air. In practice I haven't seen a problem, but it bugs me sometimes it isn't bigger. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS

The 300Tdi actually uses some of the same parts... and is progressing. Air box version 2 is being made as we speak - and it uses the same OEM style pipework.

With regards to filter options for the Puma Box - whilst I'd happily use on off the shelf filter, to make use of the space there was nothing commercially available IRB

When are you doing the performance tests Porny, and what do you expect it to retail at?

Cheers

That’s what I was hoping for, thanks for confirming. Looking forward to it. I’ll keep my eyes peeled. Donald

Will be on the dyno as soon as I have time - the Defender 90 with the first production intent Air Box is having quite a few changes, but air box will be run on a standard Defender as well.

Prices - will be confirmed ASAP. I can't deny its not going to be cheapest thing in the world due to the fabrication involved. IRB

Any updates on this development Porny ?

I’m looking to improve the air flow into the turbo so intrigued by your innovative solution. I’m not fitting a RAI so the water drain facility on yours appeals as well.

At present I’ve looked at.

1.Nakatanenga air intake on top of the wing with steel snow cowl
2.Nugget stuff air intake on std wing position.
3 Modifying the standard air box
4.Nugget stuff air box with either nugget stuff or Nakatanenga intake.

But before deciding I would like to know more on your solution.

I'm with Ian in showing interest.
I already modified the original puma airbox which was a faff but di make an improvement. I'm still running the original small pipework though.
I know Porny's a busy man but it would be good to get an update

I am certainly interested too, having seen the first 3D printed prototype inside wing attachment that was supplied to trial by Roy5695 from Porny. 2015 HT XS 90

Has anyone 'successfully' modified / tested a standard Airbox to improve it... Question
This may be a DIY take on job retaining use of the standard LR Filter.

I've been looking at this too...
Is the Nugget Stuff offer the 'best' currently, with standard filter replacements... Question SKIP
