Water system

In addition to the Defender built in water inside distribution feature I added a simple water system to my camper.

Proof of concept

A 40 liters Chantal extra thin tank, a Lilie Softserie water pump 2.1 bars, some 19 and 12mm hoses and Gardena water stop fittings.

I was not targeting a drinking water circuit, while all components but the Gardena fittings are food grade material.

Works like a charm, the water pump is very quite. I eventually used silicon 19mm hoses which are very soft and easily bent. All pack neat to close the door.

Fridge

Now that the water tank/pump is done I can reinstall all the cabinets back in. Fridge tested and installed in its case. All adjusted to the millimeter Thumbs Up

Cushions and bed

Cushions made out of an Ikea mastress. 10cm thick. Foam was very easy to cut with an electric knife. Still missing covers.

Overall bed size is 115x182cm without bed extension, 115x200cm with bed extension.

Very nicely done. Will you be fitting blinds of some sort to the windows? Darren

Hi Darren! Thank you!

Yes, custom window blinds are already done. Have a look here, page 6, my post of April 7th.

https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic80760-75.html

Alpine windows blinds will always remain fitted while other will be put on/ removed and stored on the roof shelf.

Electrical/Wiring diagram

Maximum cable length round trip are:

In 2.5mm2 : 5.00 meters for the water pump and for the double light switch for led strip
In 16mm2 : 3.00 meters between starter battery and DC charger

An 2000W inverter might be added at later stage and will be wired to leisure battery with 16/25mm2 cable as the inverter is just 10cm above the battery.

DC-DC charger is charging, fuse pannel and breakers ok, switches are functionnal, and led lights are brighter than expected Thumbs Up Some more detail work to make the led setup tidy but I am happy with the result so far.

Norvegian roadtrip feedback

It's been a while since my roadtrip preparation last summer, and quite some mileage, about 13'500km round trip to North Cape via all Norvegian scenic roads. It was great, without any technical issue, but squeaky windshield wipers which drived me nut. Yes, in Norway it seems that the most important piece of equipement are the wipers, the second most important is good quality headlights. Even better, a powerful led lightbar.

I have found the Defender very comfortable to drive, I really enjoyed every mile, whatever the road condition. My camper setup also proved to be quite good for a first attempt. Not too much errors/important flaws.

Here are the major things that I have modified after my trip. I will post separated topics for the major ones.

Defender
- Tweak the wipers arms to minimize squeaks
- Add the Landreiziger headlight loom
- Upgraded headlight bulb to Philips RacingVision GT200
- Redo all the seams with Sikaflex 521UV, which cured all water leaks...
- ... but some on the front door seal, even after having changed door seals by brand new genuine ones

Camper
- Changed the movable closing panel used for bed by a sliding panel. This moving panel was a pain to setup from inside.
- Add an external shower curtain
- Redo the windows blinds, which shrinked due to sun exposure, thus did not fit tight anymore
- Add a thermometer inside/outside
- Reduce from 10cm to 5cm foam mattress, keep the 5cm memory foam topper
- Add a battery smart shunt to monitor remaining battery capacity
- Replace chemical WC by dry WC
- Add a Lifersaver portable water purifier (Cube, 5 liters)
- Add a shelf on the left upper side above side window to extend storage capacity

Et voilà. This was an extraordinay experience. Looking forward to overlanding again soon. This time heading south

Bed panel

This movable panel, used as closing panel for the bed or as a backrest, was no so practical.

Handling from the inside was not so easy, and storing it when not used for the bed was annoying as it lays on the bench and might be prone to move/fall in case of sharp turn.

So I have opted for a extandable closing panel which is easy to slide in/out when seated inside.

Here closed and slided under the bench mattress

Here extended and used as bed closing panel

No more backrest, but not an issue as it appears that this was not so useful, the closing piece of mattress being sufficiant as backrest.

External shower curtain

After some funny experiments it appears that wherever your are, even in the most remote and desertic location, someone will suddenly appear when you are taking a quick shower. Always, not before, not after, guaranteed. So a shower curtain is needed.

As I did not have any sort of roof rack I came up with a foldable structure made of 4 square PVC tubes 23.5x23.5x700mm, hold tight to the gutter by 2 clamps and resting on the open door frame. The curtain is a repurposed Ikea blackout curtain, four sides, weighted with steel round bars.

The structure is stable, no drill required, installed in a minute and easily packed in a tube of 15x75.

Dry fast, works great. Durability of the curtain still to be assessed

Water ingress

... almost solved by having redone all seals and rain gutters with Sikaflex 521UV. Efficient, but it's a dirty job

Trick here to smooth the join is to use a draw, works like a charm, but you do not have a second chance to do it properly, first time right required.

Same here, first time right required.

Also used Captain Tolley around the windscreen rubber seal.

It cured almost all leaks, but still some ingress because of front door seals, even if these have been replaced by brand new genuine LR seals, at a prohibitive costs.
