How do you fit hinges without chipping the paint?
I'm wondering if there's a trick I'm missing.

I've just had to change my drivers door hinges.

I carefully keyed, primed, painted and clear coated them to prevent future rust as you do.

Whilst fitting them, when inserting and tightening new shiny stainless bolts I have of course chipped them down to bare metal in a few small areas around the bolt heads. (Not helped by having to tighten and re-loosen a bit to align door)

So how do I avoid this? Some trick with masking tape?

Was my clear coat just not good enough?

Am I just clumsy?

I think this is normal, but is more likely to happen if paint is applied on the thick side. With genuine bolts, I even had the head scraping on the side of the counter bores.

For my restoration I am also using stainless steel (reworked standard panheads) which I undersized the head on a lathe for this specific reason. I have also rounded a bit the edges. I have painted the hinges quite a while back so very sure that the paint reaches maximum hardness. I plan to put some grease so the bolts can ‘slide’ in the paint a little more free. But I will be fingers crossed when installing the doors. I have placed some pictures of the bolts on pg6 of my restoration thread.
