Been very busy with other stuff, so not much updates. But can say that the door is ready, and just need some more cleaning of the hardware and re assembly. As to the hinges they are yet to be painted, and have been fabricating new stainless bolts... well fabricating is a bit exaggerating, but bought some regular M8x50 pan head bolts, Philips head that I have turned into countersunks. Saves a few bucks, plus get the right look. The original bolts are actually 5/16 UNF, so the captive nuts have been re tapped to M8x1.25. There is plenty of thread for the M8. I thought or replacing the square nut in the captive fitting, but with a minimum order of 100, I thought I should try with the re tapping first. Will upload some pictures later.

Still need to make some space to start the front end of the 90. One think that I have noticed is that I need to repair the shock mounts on the front axle. The hole has elongated by the shock absorber shaft rubbing on every pothole.
My play is to fill it with a couple of weld passes. Perhaps back it by a copper or aluminum plate to support the weld material. Or there are better ideas out there?

YRM sell new mounts which can be welded on to the axle.

Yes, seen the YRM brackets. But I thought welding with welding I will try to repair and fill the missing metal on the existing one. Also cutting the old bracket, which otherwise is in perfect condition, is quite a job I guess.
Another option I might consider is cutting a strip 25mm on either side of the damper hole and then weld a 50mm wide flat bar, same thickness as the spring mount, pre drilled with the correct size hole for the damper.

That would work, but the bracket is a tenner and by the time you’ve got the welder and grinder out it’s surely better to just replace the whole thing? Then you know it’s all sound.

I have welded a thick washer over the hole in the past to get my by.

Yeah, parts are relatively cheap. The problem is that once they are shipped to my home address the total price is doubled or tripled at the least. Big Cry
I think so far I have spent 4 digit sum only in shipping costs. Have to be careful that the Mrs is not looking. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

On with the driver side door restoration. It is in remarkably good condition, although it did had some welding many years ago. But generous amount of wax (which now is a pain to clean off) has preserved it well.

Even though it is not rusted, I took the decision to de skin the lower half for proper cleaning, inspection and because the original glue between the skin and frame has failed. The passenger side door I re glued the skin with polyurethane glue, and taping on the skin feels really solid. I like to get a nice thud when shutting the door.

Was also surprised to see that the LandRover did not weld the inside of the frame. Really good thinking.. they knew people will be replacing the lower section so often. Unsure if I should get the welding set out... but also door did not fall off 32 years later either.

Got delivery of some new rubber. Shipping was a little bit more than I had anticipated Big Cry
But the smell of fresh vulcanized rubber made me happy again.
Nothing special, fairly common combination... but I think will suite the scheme I am going with. Rims will stay white for now.

Thanks. I hope the rubber does not rot before the project is finished. Embarassed

Today was a stressful day... well no stress for me, but stress on the engine crane that has lifted the engine and gearbox out of the chassis. Will upload some pictures once I get them. Was really easy with all except the bulkhead removed. I am now crying for space Big Cry amazing how much space a dismantled Defender takes up. And I have loads of stuff packed in the tub!! 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

So had a sneak peak into the engine with an endoscope. Decided to try to have a look through the intake valve of cylinder 3 at intake peak.
To describe the picture, bottom part is the intake valve. Top part is the valve seat and bore. Middle part is the piston. Seems like there is a crack in the piston.. that would be along and above the gudgeon pin. I was already planning for new pistons. I hope the bore is fine as could only find standard size, that is of good quality with coating. Will know when the head comes off!
