Volkswagen MAY build an electric 4x4 named the Scout. VW's Johan De Nysschen has talked of the idea of an electric rival to the Jeep Wrangler and Ford Bronco...with a £30,000 price tag to rival the Rivian R1S and (I say) the Grenadier. Motor Trend suggests a modified MEB electric platform with long-travel off-road suspension and a boxy body.

I still think Rivian is going to be a serious competitor in the US for the Grenadier. Oh, and the first Rivian crash happened today! Now left. |

I think it's the price that is news. If it's true, they will clean up, as this will be undercutting so many 4x4s. It follows on from news that their ID Life EV may be priced as low as £17,000. If the ID Life is sold for even less than £25,000 it will sell in truly massive numbers. If it's sub £20,000 then they may not be able to satisfy the demand. Mrs Puddle and I will buy one - absolutely certain. Likewise, a 4x4 for £30,000 is going to hurt Jeep, Ford, JLR, and so many others. Renault's Dacia range is also going to do extremely well for the same reasons - with rumours of the forthcoming Bigster at just £20,000. I expect to see lots of Bigsters at the two schools near me! Well, we will see. But I think the impact of the Dacia pricing is having an effect. You can get the Sandero for just £9,000.

Just trying to convince Mrs Puddle's aunt into the Sandero. She's never had a new car in her 74 years, and lives 300 yards away from the dealer. I think it would suit her perfectly. I think Renault are on to a winner with the Dacias. The Bigster is going to be huge for Renault. And Renault have the cutest 5 coming out - all electric. Now left. |

That’s something people don’t fully understand or appreciate: it is much, much easier to get an electric charging point into a remote location than to build a petrol station. The road trips we’ve done often include visits to places with charging available. So while we visit a museum, we are charging up, or while eating lunch at a village cafe. You just don’t get that with oil based fuels. It’s also fun that many have shared their concern about EVs of some disaster hits. Again: electricity is something you can get from multiple sources, even your own ones. It doesn’t depend on transport or oil rich countries. It can be made in your back yard. Besides, if electricity goes, the petrol stations and fuel transport will stop too. |

Provided you live in a well-organised, developed country. Not in, say, Germany... 
But...
You dont *need* that with ICE as long as (range / time to refill) is so much better than for EVs. |

But we make stops anyway on our trips. Food, pee break, visiting some spot, staying overnight at a hotel. Might as well charge while there. With an ICE vehicle you often need to make a separate stop to fuel, and you can’t do anything else while fueling.
Very soon charging spots will be way more ubiquitous than petrol stations. We recently made a 3500km tour of northern Scandinavia. Only once did we have to really spend extra time charging, as that leg didn’t have a Supercharger on route and the one station we stopped at had only one charger available (the other was broken) and someone was using it. We could have potentially skipped it, but we weren’t in a rush and preferred to have a good margin. Otherwise we would charge while doing other stuff. We never dipped below 100km indicated range left. |

I’ve never even looked at a Dacia before reading this thread but having just looked on their website and configured a Duster I am very tempted to pick one up for my daughter. £20k buys you a lot of car!

Jim, to my mind the Duster makes most sense lower down the range, Essential or Comfort trim. It’s just a shame you can’t spec 4x4 on the lower trim levels. Once you get up to £20k it’s competing with stuff that is a bit more premium. The one I’ve ordered is as basic as you can get, £13500 OTR with a bit of discount. I’m actually excited to be getting such a basic functional car, it’s weird. As it is bi-fuel am excited to see how easy it is to run on LPG. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS
