Oh dear... another project!

Latest edition to the back log of restoration projects I already have on the go. Saffy cosworth went over a yr ago and wasnt looking for anything but came across this and thought why not. Be a nice change to work on something that ain't a Defender for once. It looks reasonably solid and engine turns over but doesn't fire, luckily the trims nice as id imagine finding a nice one would be like looking for a unicorn! Biggest issue I can foresee is finding genuine good condition parts as they seem thin on the ground compared to Defender bits, the long production run compared to the Astra has definitely made bits for the other resto's easier to source along with the number of suppliers of decent quality aftermarket replacement bits. Owning another valver has made me feel 25 again!

I cant be the only one who's wandered off the Land Rover path, anyone else got something nice tucked away?

my mam had one of these about 30 years ago, Never saw a Astra MK2 in years and its been about 20 years since i saw a GTE model. But i do remember these were favourite of been nicked sadly, many times i used to see these been chased a long the main road from my house back in 1991, and one hitting a fence, after a police chase.
As for bits, you will be better off getting on a owners forum or facebook group,
I know what its like trying to find bits for cars of this age/ up to made 90s. My metro days were touch and go for parts too. Due to the age of the car, how many cars were left in scrap yards, and with rover been out of the game in general. That really did bite. I did buy another metro got reshell the one i had restored, which ended donating most of the spares for the replacement car, such as the daft bits of trim. Thumbs Up
Keep posted on how you get on with this, as i do love cars like this and projects of this nature!
Sort of bit like my 306 in away, which is after this car, but sort in the same game now, the classic car status. Thumbs Up Defender TD5 90 ---/--- Peugeot 306 HDI hatch back

Procta your so right about these disappearing back in the day, I fitted a Clifford alarm and disclok, luckily cordless grinders didn't exist then so no one ever tried to nick it. Been a busy day, replaced oil and turned it over before fitting new plugs. 2 minutes to bypassed the 90's alarm and it fired almost immediately. Trim came out and although there's surface rust on the floor pans there's only 1 small hole. Dash out next to remove that sponge bulkhead sound proofing and I'll now what I'm dealing with.
Really should have been working on 90 but I'm a sucker for a new toy!

Nice project i had the previous version when i was working at a Vauxhall Dealers ( 30+ years ago ) being as i was living in Tynemouth and working in Newcastle sadly it lasted about two weeks even with alarms on before being borrowed by the trash and ended up being used in a ‘ram’ raid on Eldon square !

The grey and the pearlescent were my two favourite colours. Keep the photos coming, hopefully you get find some decent original parts ....... Thumbs Up

Difficult one to answer that......
Why do people pay hundreds in fees and a thousand on golf sticks to knock a ball in a hole?
Why to people sit round a lake for a day and night to catch a fish they weight and put back?

Everyone has something that makes them who they are. I personally enjoy going out for a leisurely drive in an old car that isn't the same as every other none descript Euro box currently on the road

I admire that, and your ability in restoration. I just assumed there would be a story behind the Astra GTE? I never remember it being a particularly good or popular car. Not like the 205 GTi or Renault 5 Turbo. Or is it just that? James

See if you can get hold of the original alloys for the car too, What i did with the metro was fit a battery cut off under the bonnet, Just to shut down the battery. That saved the metro from going walkies 6 years ago.
Also great to park the car up to save the battery too. Thumbs Up Defender TD5 90 ---/--- Peugeot 306 HDI hatch back

I think these were a little late to the party if i remember, or that the nova was more popular.
A few of the 306 lads started to play with the Dturbo diesel 205s, they got some right old decent power out of them. I think the 306 gti 6 has followed the foot steps of the 205GTi too. Thumbs Up Defender TD5 90 ---/--- Peugeot 306 HDI hatch back
