Heater Matrix??
Hello folks,

I was out in my 110 last night and when I got home and opened the door so the interior light came on, I noticed a lot of water in the passenger footwell. When investigating today in the daylight, I've found this:

I'm thinking split heater matrix. Does that sound plausible? Darren

Yup looks about right.

Heater matrix input/output comes in on the passenger side, however it’s a factory fitting into the matrix itself, the connections to it are in the engine bay just beyond the bulkhead.

How’s the coolant level?

Coolant level is ok but I'd only been for a short drive of a couple of miles when I noticed it. I took it out again today to get it warm and see if I could replicate it but couldn't. I did have the heater temperature turned to 'cold' though.

Unfortunately, I'm not going to have time to tackle this so I'll have to book it in Rolling Eyes Darren

You would think heater matrix, but I would have expected to see the colour of the stain to reflect your coolant rather than just brown rusty water...

And if your coolant level hasn’t dropped that’s another sign it’s something else. Ride like you stole it!!
If I’m not on a bike it’s because only a 4x4 will do…

I would expect to see some evidence of lost coolant for a discharge of that size. Is it possible that the heater intake has filled with water since you last used the vehicle? If the drain teats are blocked and the rain has got it, it is possible that that has come through the air passages.

Dealer/garage charges for changing the heater matrix will be high due to the need to remove the complete dash, I am afraid.

Yes the smell of antifreeze would be obvious, although if you are using a waterless coolant there might not be such a smell.

With all the rain we’ve recently had my heater fan blew water droplets up the screen on full speed, so possibly a water collection somewhere perhaps. Question Ride like you stole it!!

My money is on this - clogged drain valve with associated accumulation of water in heater intake. Thumbs Up Rgds.

Judging by the drips on the left hand side, I’m guessing you’ve got a water leak into the vehicle from rain water etc and it’s been sat somewhere then when you’ve driven it dripped out. Hence the rusty colour.

Hmm Confused The heater intake has been protected by a snow cowl for the last three years so it won't to be that.

There's still coolant in the header tank - a quick finger dip test - but I don't know if the level has changed. If it had dropped even half an inch then that'd be quite a volume. The coolant is the same colour as what can be seen in the picture and didn't particularly smell but I'll confess that I didn't pay a lot of attention to that this morning. I'll have to check again tomorrow.

Yes, it has aircon.

The idea that there's a reservoir of rusty water sitting in the bulkhead somewhere is rather worrying. The vehicle hasn't been sitting around unused for any length of time though so it seems unlikely.

It sounds like taking the dash out may be the only way to be sure Rolling Eyes Darren

Sadly that will make changing a heater matrix even more expensive due to the second heat exchanger built into your heater box and the need to empty and refill the a/c system.

If it was coolant, would it just drib on the transmission tunnel? Very clear marks on the transmission tunnel. But then how did the water get on the side of the bulkhead (I mean where the bottom door hinge would be).
There is kind of an inspection hatch in the dash (similar to the fuse box under the steering wheel) perhaps you can peep in there to get another clue. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing
