That's a good point, I'll take a look. It is however, snowing heavily here now, which is really unusual for my part of the country

A cheap USB endoscope camera is sometimes useful for such situations.

So, after a bit of a further poke around and another decent drive (well, it was snowing), I have another theory:
There's no obvious loss of coolant and despite a a long run to get up to temperature and turning the heat on and off, I can't replicate the problem. As a result, I'm now cautiously optimistic that it isn't the heater matrix after all. The only thing amiss that I could find is that the passenger side 'fender' seal had fallen off. This is the short rubber flange that's clipped to the inner edge of the wing where it meets the bulkhead that's designed to divert away rainwater run-off. My theory therefore, is that rainwater is getting into the heater box itself and that it is rusty water much as 90dv suggested. If that's the case then I guess it's the least worst news as it means that I haven't got a coolant leak and my bulkhead isn't turning to dust. It's still an issue that will need sorting out but is less immediate and can wait until warmer weather. I'll keep an eye on it but for the time being I feel like I've dodged a bullet  Darren

Have you poked the ducks beaks under the heater box to see if they are clear/dry?

Not specifically but somebody recently posted some very similar pictures that proved that it's nothing to do with the heater and more likely the windscreen or bulkhead seals. Haven't had chance to do anything about it other than order some sealant yet, though. Darren
