Question for caravan towers - diesel soot
Evening all,

We recently purchased a caravan and whilst i'm comfortable with all the other aspects of ownership so far, am a bit puzzled / peeved as to how much soot ends up on the front of the van, and back of the Defender (standard 110 tdci 2.4). This is the result of around 8 hours driving, and no, it is not a heavy smoker in general although it does get caned fairly hard when towing: -

Is this normal and if so has anyone done anything to reduce it? I'm thinking of the following ideas: -

1. Using a "bikini" cover on the front of the 'van during transit
2. Adding an exhaust tip to point the outlet downwards / sideways
3. Nearside wheel arch side exhaust outlet
4. Use my other tow car which has a DPF .....

I've cleaned it off for now, with some effort and have added several layers of wax polish to help in future washes but wondered if anyone had any better suggestions or had tried any of mine above?

Many Thanks!

Add a black vinyl wrap in that location?
It’ll be caused by airflow backdraft, similar to the issue which pulls mudflaps into the tyres.
I find on mine with a trailer on I often get hay and stuff stuck to the back of the 90 up around the windscreen washer etc so a draft must blow up though. Diesel$ Live$ Matter. ⛽️🛢️👨‍🔧🧰⚙️ RED, WHITE & BOOST! 🇬🇧

is that a regular occurence of pics of the first time it was driven hard whilst towing, ie it may just be cleaning it out.

whats the vehicles normal economy? Cheers

Hello Thon

Yes it looks like the van is in the direct line of flow, so your suggestions sound logical
I'd try the 'down and out pipe' idea initially.

Our 90 with it's side out biased pipes hasn't suffered the same and is a visual non-smoker.

All four options are fine, but none address the root cause. I feel like a bit of a broken record at the moment, but mine was smoking a bit under load and left a soot mark on the front of my trailer which I had dismissed as being remap related as tuned diesels do tend to smoke a bit, but actually now that I've done the injector seals it doesn't smoke whatsoever!

I don't know why exactly, perhaps a sensor was picking something up and the ECU was adding extra fuel to compensate or something? Or the excess crankcase pressure was blowing oil into the intake and generating smoke? Not sure but either way could be something to look into. You can see mine smoking while towing here... Will have to get an 'after' video for comparison next time I tow!

A good illustration why Derv vehicles are being banned...I'm at pains to admit this but it's hard to argue against, especially if you live in a city. Since 1973...S1, Air Portable's, Defender's, but only my Wolf TUL HS GS remains

The answer is a Petrol V8 Rolling with laughter

Good luck towing with that. I would be bankrupt by the time I got to the camp site Rolling with laughter

My first Land Rover was a V8 Hi-cap which was used for towing a heavy exhibition unit, it regularly returned single figure mpg...

But apparently petrol is now the lesser of the two evils as a friend of mine in London discovered after having to replace their D4 SdV6 with dpf etc wi a 5.0l SC Range Rover so they can drive in the ULEZ... Whistle

Agreed and might well be the simplest solution. Thumbs Up

I've only taken the 'van out on 3 trips so far but it gets used quite hard most of the time so don't think it likely to be a "clear-out". Normal economy is 25 - 28 Mpg (remember it's caged and drags a Hannibal rack around on it), emissions within limits, 70K miles, standard engine with centre silencer removed and Nugget intake, maintained correctly by you-know-who.
